The Black Country is all about Best Bitters and this one’s a belter, copper in colour this is a lovely well rounded and approachable ale with a nice harmony between malt richness and hop bitterness. A classic hop combo of Challenger and First Gold presents layers of floral notes on top of toffee and biscuit sweetness.

Cask at Shrewsbury Arms, Stafford. Pours “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly malts but with some hints of hops and honey. In the mouth in is somewhere between bitter and sweet, with traditional hops and sweet malts. Ginger and spice gradually become evident as well. Finish is a little more sweet. This is reasonable – a straightforward simple beer.
