An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Bottle. Frothy off-white good mostly lasting head. Dark red amber colour. Heavy malty and light hoppy aroma. Caramel and chocolate notes. Moderate bitter nice chocolate flavor. Average moderate bitter finish. Creamy palate. Nice stout.

500ml bottle from the Sainsburys beer competition 2011. Very dark brown beer with lasting dark beige head. Dark fruits, bonfire smoke, roasted malt aroma. Almost a bit of clove. Hmmmm, not sure I like the flavour on this. Burnt cloves is not my favourite flavour. Yeah, not really my thing especially on the finish. Harsh and not very subtle. Eeek. Might have to drain pour this one.

Draft. Black-mahogony beer with a tan head. light chocolate and light roast aroma with malt. Malt and light roast flavor. Medium bodied - maybe a little thinner. Malt and light roast lingers with light ash.

Bottle from Presporska pivoteka, Bratislava. .Dark red brown color with medium beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, coffee. Taste, starts sweet with caramel, coninues with red fruit, coffee. Sour-bitter finish. Nice.

50 cl bottle, sample. Poured dark brown color with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, caramel and rye. Slightly sour, rye flavor with some roastedness and chocolate. Slightly dry finish with some coffee notes.

Cask at Churchkey, courtesy of Nahem - thank you, my friend! Dark maroon, large-bubble tan head. Aroma of sweat, chocolate and vanilla. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter, slightly sour. Smooth, roasted coffee. Decent enough.

Pours dark brown with tan head. Roasted malt aroma. Lightly roasted malt flavor with a slight metallic taste and an ashy finish. Pretty bland. Medium body with moderate carbonation.

Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a tan head over a deep brown body. Aroma of brown sugar, licorice, molasses, autolysis, leather. Taste is sweet, berries, leather and watery ashy elements. Light bubbles.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma has notes of caramel, nuts, and alcohol, as well as lighter notes of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt as well as lighter notes of fruit, prunes, cocoa, and bitter nuts, leading to a bitter, roasted almost burnt finish.
