An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Bottle at home in London, with Lyoli, while eating beef stew and watching The English Patient. Pours clear, red-brown with a small, off-white head. Aroma of dry, lightly ashy roasted malts. Sweet flavor, nice mocha and some dirt, light earth and leaves. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Faintly dry finish, light minerals, cocoa, light ash, weak coffee. Very smooth, easy drinking stout. Part of the Sainsburys Beer Super Championship.

Bottle @ you never walk alone, Kolding. Pours ruby amber with a small creamy head. Nuts, vague roast, dust and fruit. Smooth. Pleasant!

Bottle from Sainsbury’s Purley Way. It pours opaque black, with a thin beige head. The nose is caramel, roasted malt and smoke. The taste is roasted/burnt malt, bitter chocolate, tar, burnt tires, burnt caramel, smoke and charcoal, with a dry burnt finish. Medium-full body, moderate carbonation. Ok.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Dark brown pour with a beige head. Currants, caramel, chocolate, licorice and a little vanilla aroma. Raisins, dark chocolate, coffee flavours. Dry, rich bitter-sweet finish. Nice.

500ml bottle. Pours black with a medium, frothy head. Aroma is roast and yeast. Taste has some dry roast to start. Roast coffee finish. Ok, nothing special.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Dark ruby-red brown colour, tan head. Nose is roasted malts, chocolate, forest fruits. Flavour is roasted malts, chocolate, cocoa dust, fruits. A bit light bodied, but well drinkable.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Dark, ruddy brown with a big, off-white head. Aroma of prunes, chocolate, roasted malts and porridge oats. Flavour was sweet to start, with some caramel and berry fruit, followed by chunky chocolate and burnt cereal and a dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Bottle bought at Sainsburys in Pinner. A black/ruby coloured pour with a pretty decent lasting beige head on top. Roasty, malty aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, chocolate, dark fruit, some bitterness, dry. Decent Stout in a bottle with a great label.
