An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Dark brown color. The arom ais strange; it has some nice chocolate and bread, but also acetone, nail polish. The flavor confirms the aroma: some good chocolate, soft mouthfeel, with light acidity.
Probably a good beer in bad conditions.

Total Wine, Fairfax 500ml ($5ish): Pours a dark brown with a beige head. Aroma is chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is rather light for a stout and body is as well. This beer is neither bitter nor sweet, but is just a bit of both. I found this to be a bit bland and disappointing.

Bottle. Dark chestnut, low tanned lace. Berrylike chocolate aroma. Light metallic roast entry, dark milk chocolate, berry compot and orangepeel notes, flowery and grassy hops in the finish, citric aftertaste. Mellow dry mouthfeel. Really pleasantly balanced stout. .

500ml bottle (bottle conditioned): best before 17 Feb 2013, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard 9 Apr 2012. Looks good: tan head on an exceedingly dark body. The nose and taste are a great blend of dark chocolate, liquorice, bitter coffee and burnt prunes. Not rich in body but flavoursome and interesting: a fine brew.

Soot nose, with hints of treacle. Reddish dark brown., medium tan head, good lacing. Flavor is very very sooty, very dry like an irish stout, but thinner. Somewhat astringent.

Bottle, at John Bull, Aalborg. It pours an almost black body, with a dense, finger-thick light beige head. The aroma is roasted and lightly burnt. Some notes of prunes in the back. It is burnt and roasted in the mouth, but with enough sweetness to avoid it being too much. Very smooth on the palate, medium body. Roasted finish with a nice hoppy bitterness and some green pine cone hints. A very pleasant one, well brewed and tasteful. 120219

Bottle. Medium creamy head, rather short duration. Dark reddish brown colour, almost black. Aroma of coffee, caramel, roasty, earthy, smoke. Taste medium to strong bitter with light to medium sweetness during the first touch. Medium bitter finish. Certainly not the best stout, but reasonable.
