750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled December 2009. Pours hazy reddish orange color with a nice 2 finger light khaki head with great retention that reduces to a lacing cap. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, candi sugar, plum, raisin, apricot, molasses, biscuit, apple, and yeast spices. Some nice and interesting aromas. Taste of caramel, plum, apple, molasses, gold raisin, candi sugar, biscuit, and spicy yeast. Lingering notes of caramel, dark fruit, molasses, and spices on the finish for a bit. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel. Very smooth drinking for 10%; with only a slight warming on the finish noticed. Good balance of flavors and spiciness. Overall this is a very nice Belgian strong pale. Interesting mix of flavors that come together very well.

750mL bottle, pours amber orange with an off-white head. Aroma of yeast, cinnamon and molasses underneath that fights through to the forefront eventually. Flavour of licorice, mint, yeast, sweet dried fruits and molasses. The aging has certainly done it well. Exquisite.

clear brown small smooth offwhite head. aroma : dry like dusty, sweet dark fruits like figs, caramel, malts. not really sweet as you might think from my description. faint alc. fant flowery note. Aroma reveals a strong beer but not much of a hint as to how it tastes. Let’s find out. flavor is strong sweet dark fruits (like raisins, figs) syupy note, strong note of alc. I think the alc. is too easily detectable and it sort of makes the beer a little more cloying than what would be perfect. not much hops in this brew. the overall impression is syrup, dark fruits and alc.

Celebrating my 900th rating tonight (October 2008)... so went to my beer cellar, and was looking for something special. Found this lonely bottle of Unibroue 16, celebrating their 16th anniversary a few years back, and had not tried it yet. It was time to open up this baby ! Like other Unibroue strong ales, this one had a huge caramel off-white foamy head that stays forever (almost) and creates patchy lacing all around. The brew itself is caramel-orange in colour with lots of very tiny sediments floating all over. Beautiful tiny bubble active carbonation too. On the back of the bottle, 04-12-2006 is written in small. The nose is pretty much on the red apple side, with the usual Unibroue yeast and a touch of alcohol and sourness. The taste is a mix of lots of fruits, like the red apples re-appear at first, with some citrus (lemon, orange) in the middle, and a little bit of peaches in the aftertaste. All along, we find some hints of caramel and spices. Not really sweet, not too spicy and with a tad of bitterness. This beer is retired now, and that was my only bottle... so good trying you... Unibroue 16.

750ml bottle pours an orange rust color with a thin white head. Nose has apples, sugar, some light yeast. Flavor starts with a nice butterscotch character, more apples, pears, pale malts. Finish is medium bodied with a touch of alcohol and some sweetness.

Bottled (thanks omhper!). Amber colour, small slightly off-white head. Aroma is spices, caramel malts, sugary and mild alcohol. Flavour is rather sweet sugar, some mild spices, and yeast and some nectar. Rather sweet, but also shows a more wooden side that probably has come with aging this beauty.

Amber color, small white head, some lace. Orange, watermelon, and other fruits in the aroma, some yeast too. Fruity (mango, waterrmelon, orange peels), some toffee. Nice, balanced Belgian ale. Some earthy notes.

Bottle from late 2007 opened October 2009. Thick reddish-brown with a solid thick head. Aroma has some alcohol in it, and shows it’s a little of course, but also has a very nice dark cherry touch. In some ways I think the aging has really worked well for this one, and I haven’t thought the other Anniversary beers were so impressive in that respect. Sweet, with a tangy yeast and alcohol laced taste. Soft bubbly mouthfeel. Quite an awesome beer.
