Ever since the Viking era, the Christmas beer tradition has been strong in Norway. As stated in the 'Gulatingsloven' (a regional law text valid until 1274), every farmer was bound by the law to brew beer for Christmas and christen it according to the new faith, otherwise running the risk of losing his assets to the king and bishop. The Christmas beer was normally brewed from the best grain of the season and would be strong with a rich malt flavour. Ringnes Juleøl (Christmas Beer) is a modern version of the traditional Norwegian Christmas beer of average alcohol content.
Ringnes Christmas Beer has a golden red colour with a malty aroma marked by caramel, freshly baked bread and raisins. The beer has a light, smooth malty sweetness and a low, yet noticeable bitterness.

God duft av rosiner, krydder og nøtter. Lite skum. Frisk smak av rosiner og krydder. Et godt øl som tåler å stå litt. Denne lå inne med best før Sep 2011 og er trolig fra 2010.

500ml Can (Thanks Cunningham) - Copper red in colour. Raisins, caramel, grain and toffee apple in the aroma. Sweet, fruity and malty taste with apples, raisins and marzipan detected.

50cl can. Pours clear deep amber with an off-white to beige head. Mild malty aroma with caramel and hints of dark fruits and hops. Some roasty notes present. Sweet with a lighty dry finish with some bitterness. Drinkable, but an incredible boring Christmas beer.

Can in Tromso. Clear deep amber beer. Decent off white head. Crispy semi dry palate. Minerally malt, sweetish with a trace of caramel. Trace of dried fruits at the finish. A Christmas beer? Geez - Christmas must be grim in Norway! :)

0.33l bottle. Pours a brown red clear body with a quickly fading off-white head. Aromas of old cheese, sweet malts, caramel and a almost metallic note. Medium bodied (actually less watery than I first thought) and not to lively carbonated. Boring taste. Some almost like burned caramel and some fade bitterness.

Amber with off white head - nice aroma off caramel malt - same taste of sweet malt, some bitterness - thin body, short finish, but still ok beer
