Bottle. Black colour with a small tan head. Malty aroma with hints of licourice and chocolate. Roasted malty and slightly sour flavor with hints of licourice and chocolate. Slightly roasted malty finish.

A pitch black beer with a chocolate brown head. The aroma is very sweet malty. The flavor is also very sweet - a little too sweet for me - with primary notes of roasted bread and a smooth mouthfeel and a powerful body.

Nearly black beer; brown head. Very strong, candid nose of black malts, leafy notes, some meaty-estery stuff and molasses. Surprisingly dry-spicey, nearly bitterish taste, at odds with the nose; tobacco and coriander - and diacetyl! Thatโ€™s what it is - yeast-management problems? Very well bodied, and indeed, like partly unfermented beer. In stark opposition to the XXXX Stock ale, this is again one of Pitfields problematic brews. Pushing a poor British yeast beyond endurance?

Bottled. Aroma of apple and licorice. Clean, rounded mouthfeel. Chewy malts, coffee and loads of cane sugar dominates this flavourful, but rather unrefined stout. The recipe is from 1792? Perhaps it's about time to update it...
