A satisfying, full-flavoured black brew with a good balance of malt, roast and fruit. Bittersweet flavours carry through to a dry finish.

Cask at the Pembury Tavern on 30th June 2010. Thick, black body with a greyish head. Strong vanilla aroma and plenty of roast malts giving lingering coffee notes and some bitterness. On very good form in the pub, with a smooth but delightfully thick texture. Excellent.

Cask@Pembury Tavern. Deep ambery brown colour, small brown head. Aroma is lots of butter, some roasted malt and black coffee. Flavour is roasted malts, toffee, mild butter and also some black coffee. Quite strange at first, but then turns quite mellow and balanced.

Cask Conditioned at The Pembury Tavern, London
Dark brown color, almost black. Light chocolate aroma. Round body, with a good and smooth mix of caramel and chocolate, very light instant coffee at the end. Simple but good.

Half pint hand-pulled and served at the right drinking temperature at The Pembury Tavern in Hackney. Dark body colour with a small tan head. Smell of malt and liquorice. Roasted cocoa malts in flavour with a touch of coffee tartness in the ending. Rather soft palate (12.08.2008).

(Cask at Oakdale Arms, Harringay, London, 28 Nov 2007) Black colour with foamy, brown head. Roasted nose with notes of chocolate, sweet liquorice, dark fruit and cocoa. Roasted taste with dark chocolate, strong sweet coffee, liquorice, teriyaki sauce, hints of dark rhum and coffee liqueur. Sweetish, slightly over medium body with smooth mouthfeel. Lovely beer with lots of complexity.

Cask at Merton Summer Beer Festival 06-07-07 This was another one that I tried prior to the festival but also got to taste once or twice thereafter. Poured black without much of a head. This tasted a bit like putting oneโ€™s finger into a jar of cocoa (but very dark bitter cocoa) there was some creaminess there but it was very much held back, it finished off in a nice roasty dry fashion. Maybe it was me but unusually I just didnโ€™t get on with many of the dark beers this weekend and felt that Iโ€™ve short changed them a bit with my ratings, I will try again and hopefully will rate this in a better light.

Cask handpull at Pembury Tavern, Hackney. Black colour with lasting tan head. Subtle roasty/toasty aroma. Quite chewy in mouth, some sourness, liquorice. Quite a harsh stout. Very interesting though. Nice but not my stout of choice.
