Bottled at RBESG. Dark amber. Rich beechwood style smokey aroma. Medium bodied with soft mouthfeel. Intense smoke flavour accompanied by buttery malt. Unusually bitter finish for a smoke beer. Straightforward and uncomplicated, but for a rauchbier lover like me very enjoyable.

(Bottle 65 cl) Clear amber colour with a decent, creamy, beige head. Pronounced smoky aroma. Malty with the smoke being all over the flavours too. Kinda light-bodied. 120805

Bottled @RBESG’05
Nut brown, smokey nose of smoked ham. Medium-bodied. Smokey, mildly hoppy. Good hoppy-smokey aftertaste. Good smoke beer.

Bottled. Dark brown beer with a constant head. The aroma is pleasant and not too stongly smoked whilst the flavour has a nice long lasting light dry finish with a body full of smoked ham. Overall a smoked beer that is not over bearing.

650ml bottle. Chestnut colour. Good fruity malts, smoked meats and slightly bready. Really nice beer, but I was drinking it whilst watching the cricket at Canterbury so wasn’t really paying attention

[At GABF 2004] A hazy brown beer with a collapsing light brown head. The aroma is slightly smoked - definately from beechwood. While the flavor is sweet, slightly smoked, and with a dry end.

2004 bottle. Oh ya, here we go. Pours a lovely amber-auburn color. But wait, where’s all the sediment? Not saving it right away. But that’s understandable, it takes a while to dig in to the sediment. This one was light reddish-amber to murky beige towards the end. Aroma reeks of alderwood. Nuts, caramel, almonds cashews and then it hits! The hops??? What the hell? This is an APA with smoked malt. At first I’m disgusted at the lack of style guidelines, but then I come to and realize how well they did with this one, and then I also remember that I don’t care about style guidelines. Beautiully balanced. Hoppy? Yes, but it’s perles. You can handle perle hops. Moderately clean finish, light smoke. Great stuff!

Bottle: Poured a clear light brown beer with a medium bubbly off-white head with average retention. Aroma is comprised of subtle smoke and some malt, I was expecting a bit more smoke but I’m not complaining since smoke beer is not my favourite style. Taste can also be described as lightly smoke with some nice malt to support the smoke. Overall, this is probably a more balanced smoke ale then what is generally known as smoke ale which I appreciated since this is not my favourite style.

On tap at Rogue’s Portland taphouse, sampled 4 August 2004. Copper orange-red body, thin light cream/off-white head. Smoked malt flavor (duh) and grain (toast) but that damned house yeast still dominates the flavor profile! Medium-bodied. Nice twist but Pacman rules all.

This starts out with a big head on a deep copper beer. Heavy smoke aroma that will please the smoke lover but is enough to turn away anyone that doesn’t like the style. Smoke is strongly present in the flavor as well, but overall there are hops and malt to balance this out nicely.
