La Terrible is a dark brown beer on lees and is part of a collection of exotic and refined Unibroue beers brewed using 100% natural raw materials. It may be drunk as an aperitif or as an after dinner digestive. It is equally a perfect accompaniment to the above-mentioned dishes or a pleasant alternative to coffee.

750mL bottle, pours a very dark brown with a reddish tinge. Aroma is predominantly yeast, with raisin and caramel. Flavour is yeast, raisin or grape, slightly chocolately malty and various other dark fruits, as well as a dry vinous quality. My favourite from Unibroue.

26th October 2008. Very dark brown beer with a cream head. Mild and smooth but quite dry. Subtle milk chocolate and subtle cherry. Dry finish. Hides the alcohol very well but overall the beer feels a little tired.

750 ml bottle at C’est What? in Toronto. Opaque black with a large tan head. Hints of pine and licorice. Creamy chocolate mousse flavor with an edge of slight smoke. Finish of cocoa and milk chocolate. Alcohol shows through, otherwise I’d give it a 4.5 for taste. Great body. Definitely to be sought out.

Re-rate after many, many years.... of all the beers I’ve found over the years, this one stood out as a re-rate. I barely remembered it the first time, one of the first monster beers I’d tried, so it was certainly high on my list should I encounter it again. It appeared in Vancouver, and I obliged to take on the monster bottle. This pours pitch-dark with a huge smooth head. The aroma is of oak and cherries, some yeast and citrus. The flavour is a huge and smooth morass of molasses, yeast, sugary esters and barley. Wet finish. After years and years of rating so many different beers, this remains one of my favourites. Worth every penny to re-connect with an old classic and it’s great that Unibroue is still making it. ------------ Original rating 7/1/2009 Probably the best way to get knocked out.... a dark brew, very smooth, but by the time you’re halfway through this monster bottle you’ll have forgotten anything about what the beer was when it started. Not like that’s a bad thing, though. 8/5/9/4/16

Shining mahogany body with a white ring around the rim of the glass. Moderate aroma of orange shells. Rich and exciting flavours of grapes, sweet berries, prunes and brown sugar ending up with a suitable bitter touch, added a little alcohol tingle. Soft carbonation. Worth repeating in larges quantum than the 100ml taster I had on EBF (Copenhagen, 14.09.2008).

Bottle. Very dark ruby with little beige head. Not a lot of aroma - maybe tangy, possibly meaty. Medium body and carbonation. Intense and rich flavour, obviously of a Belgian strong ale style, but was not interesting or complex enough. Caramel and apples in the foretaste with abitter finish. It’s a good beer, but I was disappointed. It lacks finesse.
