Bah Humbug is a brew using not just the traditional malted barley and hops, but also a big sprinkling of cinnamon. The effect of the cinnamon is to give a spicy, almost banana-like flavour as often found on German wheat beers; and this blends with the sweet-honeyed flavours of the Maris Otter barley to create a beer with all the fruit flavours of mince pies, Christmas Pudding and Christmas cake all rolled into one.

Bottle. Amber with an off-white head that sticks around as a bare coat. Smells surprising light on caramel, cinnamon, mace, honeyed dough. Now the light body is not a surprise. Taste is slightly sweet with sultanas, pears a little banana, cake spices. Little bitterness. Pleasant but a bit vacant in the middle.

Cask @ Bankers Draft (JDW). pours a thin copper brown. Little head & carbonation. Smells of clove, cinnamon & mulberries. I was afraid from the aroma that it would be like drinking liquified potpourri - I was wrong. Sweet but balanced and very pleasant. One of the better festive ales Iโve had - on 2 January! Bah Humbug indeed!

Cask at The Anchor, Birmingham. Poured a clear medium amber with a thin white heat and lots of broken lace. The aroma is weak malt, yeast and light citrus. The flavour is medium bitter with a fruity malt spicy aniseed palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Really very drinkable and perfect for a session which is something I rarely do these days because of all this damn ticking ;-)

Nice red-brown colour. Light cinnamon and dried red fruits with the red fruit sweetness coming through well in the finish.

Cask at the Hobgoblin, Reading. Deep amber with a thin white head. A fruity beer dominated by sweet cinnamon. In fact, it tastes like Hobgoblin with cinnamon syrup added. There is an earthy bitterness in the finish, but not enough to balance the sticky sweetness. Oh well, at least itโs that rare thing- a UK Christmad ale that actually tastes Christmassy!

bottle from Sainsburys at the folks - Brown/dark amber pour with small off-white head. Malty sweet fruits, caramel, lots of spice, but strange overpowering taste smell we can't quite place it, but we all agreed it wasn't nice, dodgy bottle maybe (was well within date though)

Poured from a 500mL bottle. Clear dark amber with minimal off-white head. Malty sweet winter ale aroma with toffee and slight vanilla. Typical winter ale taste with mild banana. Lacks in body and texture.

Copper coloured ale with a small ruby glow to it. Has a sweet spiced aroma and an equally sweet taste to it, but mild in character. No head.

Cask at JDW Arthur Robertson; clear brown pour, sweet malt aroma, bitter taste with a hint of nutmeg. Quite good one of the better Xmas ales Iโve had.
