Bah Humbug is a brew using not just the traditional malted barley and hops, but also a big sprinkling of cinnamon. The effect of the cinnamon is to give a spicy, almost banana-like flavour as often found on German wheat beers; and this blends with the sweet-honeyed flavours of the Maris Otter barley to create a beer with all the fruit flavours of mince pies, Christmas Pudding and Christmas cake all rolled into one.

500 ml bottle. Pours a rich mahogany with large white head. Aromas of malts, toasty biscuits, and spice. Dusty, dry, medium body. Flavor of dried cinnamon powder, tea, malts, and a bit of butterscotch. Perhaps a bit too much spice for the malt.

Cask at Hamilton Hall, JDW, London. Pours clear amber with a small, white foam head. Nose holds some berries, mild spices, brown bread. Light sweet flavor with pleasant gingerbread, some toasty sugars, dried fruits. Light bodied with soft carbonation - defintely lacking some condition. Moderately sweet finish, further toasty bread, light cinnamon and ginger, grapes and berries. OK stuff.

Smells alright. A little cinnamon and clove - some oak. Pours dark orange with a little initial head and lacing. Taste has some oaky bitterness and a sour malt at the end of the palate. Pretty soft carbonation. Bottle.

500ml bottle - Deep ruby-amber body with light carbonation and a frothy tan head. Aroma of nutmeg, cinnamon spices and caramel malt. Body is thin and flavours of the above spices with sweet cocoa, banana and a bit of maltiness. A bit of a winter warmer, but having just had a week of Belgian Stouts and Quads it loses a bit in that department.

December 2007: My brown 500ml bottle states the abv is 5%, is it a watered down version I wonder? After an evening of putting Christmas decorations up I needed a decent drink, would this do? Poured into a straight sided pint glass it looked fine, a deep mahogany red/brown body with a large biege foaming head, that sadly faded to a wisper very swiftly. The aroma was of malts, unsweetened toffee and some plum pudding spices. It reeks of winter nights in front of a coal fire. The taste follows the aroma, this is an accomplished winter beer, a reminder of Victorian times, Dickens and Christmas past. A little on the fizzy side, but still a well balanced beer with a good flavour retension and a body with some substance within. As I have already indicated, a fine beer, pity the head did a runner early.

Bottle from Morrisons. Dark orange colour, medium off-white head. Nose is caramel malts, cinnamon, toffee. Flavour is malty, cinnamon, dry biscuit, a bit metallic. Dry and spicy finish. Not a fan of cinnamon.

Aroma - Light aroma of spicy hops, some spices, slightly metallic.
Taste - Spicy hops, spices, caramel malt. Unusual flavour, but becomes cloying after a while. Not like Christmas cake, taste gets worse as you drink more.
Palate - Soft carb, thin to medium body. Finish of sweet malts then bitter spicy hop, bit metallic, then over-lingering cinnamon that dries the mouth and doesn’t clean.
Overall - The cinnamon doesn’t work here for me. After 1/2 pint it was drain pour. Not a good beer.

Originally rated December 2006. Now comes in a brown bottle, and this one had a best before date: 20 JUL 07. Pours a clean caramel-copper colour with a good off-white head that stays quite long and has great lacing. Lightly carbonated and the aroma of cinnimon take time to come out. At first, it is more sweet (caramel malt, brown sugar) and nutty. Medium-bodied mouthfeel and quite smooth. Caramel malt also is present in the taste, with some mild apples in the finish, with the cinnamon in the background. Some light vanilla softens everything. Wish this one would be spicier, but good for people afraid of a "punch-in-tha-face-Christmas-beer".
