Oct 2009: Brown 500ml bottle, just out of date, poured into a UK pint sleeve glass. Amber-copper in colour, clear and fairly bright. The head retension was very poor, it left before it arrived. A mild hop smell, some toffee too. The toffee hints were in the flavour as well. Malty aftertaste took over from the toffee feel. Maris Otter barley, Fuggles and Goldings are the hops used. It’s name ’Huffkin’ comes from the Kentish tea cakes which are often flavoured with hops!

[Cask at Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] Chestnut, slight creamy head. Treacle and green leaf aromas, leading into an earthy leaf-mulch finish with a slight bitterness. Generally quite sweet, but somehow the right sort of ale for autumn.

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Copper with a thin cream head; fruity aroma of brambles and apples; light and fruity flavour at first then becoming floury; and lacking finish. Disappointing.
