Draft at Craft Brewed. Pours a deep toffee color with some gold highlights and a finger of light beige head. Lots of caramel, toasted biscuit and toffee aromas with some grapefruit zest. Sweet on the palate with the booze present. A little heavy and syrupy after a while. Grapefruit flesh and juice mid-palate. Big bitterness on the finish.

Clear copper and amber coloured body with a lighter toffee glow and a decent two to three centimetre tall off-white head that fades relatively slowly, especially for the style. Aroma of aromatic peaches and citrus with a lot of apricot notes and somehow even more resin and astringent notes from the high alcohol and large malt presence. Medium to Full-bodied; Syrupy sweet flavour with a deep robust malt backbone, some caster sugar and toffee notes, but this is largely about the big hop bite from the citrusey and very piney hop flavours that shows a lot of astringency, punch and especially lingering bite at the end from all the alcohol, good deal of hops and a one-dimensional flavour profile. Aftertaste is squarely focused on the hops, bitterness, citrus and much less so on the complexities, which is okay, but the alcohol and malt kind of get in the way near the end, with the reminder in the warmth of the mouth and the stomach about how much alcohol was in here to begin with. Overall, a decent Imperial IPA with a ton of alcohol, a bunch of deep and astringent flavours that start off nicely, but after a few seconds, minutes or longer of tasting these same notes make this go down fairly harshly and lead to an uneasiness as this beer gets drunk, especially for a large format, should you buy it this way. I sampled this thirty-two ounce growler fill on draught at K-1 Beer and Wine in Arlington, Virginia on 20-December-2017 for US$10,99 sampled at home in Washington on 21 & 22-December-2017, but makes me wish that I had a small format of this one, perhaps a single twelve ounce can, as opposed to the punch of 32 ounces of this will deliver.

Sampled in draft this beer poured a hazy dark copper color with a medium sized foamy orange white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was musty and yeasty with a moderate grapefruit presence. The flavor was tangy and musty with orange,. grapefruit and a bit of earthiness. Long hoppy finish. Moderately full bodied. Ok

Can from Wine Warehouse. Clear golden with an off-white head. Aroma of citrus peel, resin, pine. Flavor is bitter citrus peel, a little juice, a bit candied in there too, but probably from the alcohol. Orange, grapefruit, lemon, tropical fruit, candied sugar. Resin and pine, for sure, but this isn't a resinous IPA. Finishes a bit resinous, but still not overwhelming. Hides the alcohol pretty well, but you can tell just by flavor it's high. Good job.

12 ounce can into tulip glass; no can dating, but is a recent release. Pours slightly hazy deep golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big ruby red grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, light pepper/pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Touch of booze in the aromas, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops, grapefruit, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of huge ruby red grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, pine, honey, light caramel, toasted bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Moderate pine, citrus rind, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon/orange peel, citrus rind, pepper, pine, honey, toasted bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit, and bready malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, creamy, bready, sticky, resinous, rindy, and slightly slick balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mild warmth of 12%, with no booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic fruited DIPA! All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/pine hops, grapefruit, and bready malt flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV, and the fairly aggressive bitter/drying finish. Very similar to the base beer, but you get more of a juicy ruby red grapefruit vibe going on. Would be hard to notice a difference blindly. Looking forward to the next variation, hope it is something unique to the hop profile instead. A highly enjoyable offering, enjoyed this just as much as the original.
