Behind every great beer are amazing stories of all the people, places and ingredients that culminate in what you have in your hand. The Stone Farm to Can Series is our heartfelt tribute to the dedicated farmers who cultivate the hops that help bring our beers to life. Each beer in this series features hops grown at a single specific farm as our way of paying homage to their harvest. Many of these growers breed and develop their own varieties, like CLS Farms in Moxee, Washington did with El Dorado hops, named for the mythical hidden City of Gold. Moxee lies nestled in Yakima Valley, the very real paradise of hop production in the American Pacific Northwest. Stone Moxee Gold IPA is loaded with Centennial and of course El Dorado hops, all sourced from the fruitful bines of CLS Farms. The valley itself may be mostly green, but its bounty of hops are as good as gold.
This beer is the first in our Farm To Can Series, highlighting our hop growers that obviously play a critical role in our beers here at Stone Brewing. This IPA features hops from CLS Farms in Moxee, Washington. CLS Farms is a large grower of the amazing Centennial, a classic hop found in several Stone Brewing beers, most notably Stone IPA. El Dorado is a newer hop developed by CLS Farms, featured in Stone Delicious IPA. Our brewers paired both hops together to form a seemingly simple but amazing West Coast IPA that celebrates collaboration and the bond between grower and brewer.

Backlog. Pours lightly hazy gold with a one finger white head. Tropical fruit aroma the flavor has good bitterness. It’s very fruity and medium bodied with a bitter finish. Solid ipa. Not fantastic but it is a bit past the best by date.

Crisp and perfectly clear golden and peach coloured body with a thin off-white head, barely a centimetre tall. Aroma of grass and hay with very little else, aside from a floral bitterness and not much malt for support here. Light to Medium-bodied; Strong grassy and herbal flavours dominate with again, a small biscuity bite and a dash of sugars from some apples or pears, with little else in terms of complexity aside from the floral and light grassy hop flavours that do show up at the very end. Aftertaste is dry throughout without so much bitterness, but a small and decidedly floral, grassy and herbal hop note that gives the punch at the end. Overall, a relatively well balanced beer that shows the biscuity malts coupled with the relatively low alpha acid and herbal bite that you'd get in an East Coast or European IPA but nothing amazing nor worth searching out for. I sampled this twelve ounce can, purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 06-March-2019 (my wife's birthday) for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 30-November-2019.

From a $3 can from vintage, its clear gold of course. Smell is sweeter perfume hop flora. Taste is ubiquitous IPA. A plethora of nasty arrogant bitter preservative happy BS. Any alky content is amplified by the butyl rubber mouth coating effects of this brew. CARNAGE, CARP, CASH-STRAPPED, CASTIGATE, CASTRATED. Such a CATACLYSMIC, CATASTROPHE and a CAUSTIC CHAGRIN. All ends up being just a CHALLENGING & CHAOTIC, CHASTEN IPA CAPRICE.

Moxee came by way of Total Wine in Santa Fe, NM recently. Distinctive 12 oz can, I like the label. I’m using a Flying Saucer shaker for this sampling. It is a clear, medium yellow in color with a tall top of almost pure white bubbles. Lacing? Definitely. The nose is candy and hops. And a drink, hmm, unexpected. Guess I am more of a Mosaic hops kind of guy. Leather, corn, grass, hay, lemon lozenge. A decent bitterness. It improves as I continue but really not my deal.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phloen Chit, Bangkok. Poured a clear light golden colour with a lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, funky, gluey, light citrus, big woody hop. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter, with a crisp, malt, fruity, light pepper spice, big dry woody, light floral hop bitter palate and a long bitter finish that goes on forever. Medium bodied with average carbonation. More bitter than my ex-girlfriend!

From a 355ml can on 22/5/2019. Pours a clear golden with a small head. The nose is a bit zesty, sharp and lemony. Taste wise, there's biscuit malt, some muted stone fruit sweetness, and a big, firm lingering bitterness which is equal parts lemon and resin. Reminds me quite a bit of a liquid lemon throat lozenge. medium bodied with average to lively carbonation. A high quality brew, as one has come to expect from Stone, but perhaps just a smidge too abrasive in the finish to really win me over.

Can. Clear amber with a 3/2cm white head that lasts very well. Not bursting with aroma but there's grapefruit, mandarin and crackers with hints of tropical and stone fruit. More tropical fruit (mainly mango, but guava too) in the taste though and the finish has a fair bit of resin. Less sweet than their normal IPA - which is both good and bad: the hop aromatics end up a bit flat at the end but the until then the palate is gracile. Bitter at the end. Lacks depth - at 7% it should satisfy rather than merely scratch an itch.

Draft pour at Stone Brewing Richmond. Poured a clear, yellow-orange color with a small, slightly off-white head. Another stone IPA that reminds me of their standard IPA. It's fine. Nice juicy character, resin. Crisp, decent.
