On cask up the White Lady. Appearance - deep brown to black. Fawn head. Nose - a bit of toffee and chocolate coming through. Some ginger bread. Taste - sweet chocolate and toffee. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a finish that could be zippier! Overall - deep flavoured but could be fresher on the finish.

Cask at the Regal (JDW), Cambridge. Dark brown, very dark. Cloudy tan head. Luscious chocolate aroma. Taste is sweet and malty but there’s a bitter almost sour backbone. Thin body and oddly astringent aftertaste. Surprising but I don’t care for this.

Cask at the Monk’s Retreat, Reading. Mahogany-black with a thick beige head. Lightly effervescent. The chocolate is very obvious; there’s a hint of fake chocolate but it just about manages to stay tasting genuine- maybe veering towards a chocolate liqueur in taste. A good amount of roastiness balances out the sweetness. Some coffee granules too and maybe just a touch of marmalade in the aftertaste. A well balanced, tasty beer; just needs to lose that hint of fake chocolate to make it really good.

Strong aroma, especially sweet chocolate. A very rich and creamy texture. Certainly sweet but does have a very luxurious chocolatey taste. Finish has a light bitterness. A sipper.

Cask at WHOAF 2015. It pours jet black with a small-medium light tan head. The nose is soft, sweet, milk chocolate cake, light tangy malt, cocoa powder and chocolate ice-cream. The taste is bitter-sweet, chocolate, earthy roast, charred wood, plum, fig, light tang and mocha/chocolate powder with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Not as sweet as feared. Balance is pretty solid. Decent.

50cl bottle from Marks & Spencer, Camberley. A glossy peat colour with a billowing beige head; dry, cooking chocolate aroma; deep dry chocolate taste, with a milky body and a balancing bitterness from some very well roasted malts (that is, they’ve been toasted to cinders). Unfortunately the burnt notes leave an unpleasant aftertaste, otherwise a rather good chocolatey stout. (7/4/7/3/12=3.3)
Cask at the Bear (JDW), Maidenhead. Opaque black with a reddish glint and a creamy beige head; milk chocolate aroma; thin milky texture with a sweet coffee taste to start then milky chocolate; following by a gentle bitterness building into a deep bitter chocolate finish. Rather good. (6/4/7/3/14=3.4)

Triple chocoholic in cask at GBBF 2015. It has a lovely chocolate aroma on a deep black body. The taste is straight up chocolate goodness. Yum. 3.8
