Orach Slie (or “Golden Nectar”) is matured in casks from the multi-award-winning, family-owned Glenfarclas Distillery. In contrast to the punchy, dark Ola Dubhs aged in casks from the wild isles of Orkney, Orach Slie is a much lighter, easy-going beer that reflects the softer, sweeter malts of Glenfarclas which nestles in the rolling Speyside moors of Banffshire. Having trialled a variety of different beers, the brewers settled on a lightly-hopped, high-abv version of Schiehallion to perfectly complement the classic, honeyed-sherry malts of Glenfarclas.

Orach Slie pours a light straw colour and immediately displays a delicate malty character on the nose. It has a surprisingly robust, chewy mouthfeel that belies its light appearance, coating the palate with gentle-sweetness which in turn gives way to a pleasantly-bitter, drying (and slightly tangy) finish.

Bottle @ benzai shared by Joes. Clear golden colour with no head. Smells sweet, some wood, malts. Tastes sweet, malts, oak. Medium body, soft carbo, smooth. This shouldn’t be a premium lager.

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Joes. Clear amber golden color, very small soapy off-white head. Aroma is weird, some malts and a hint of liquor. Taste malts, again some liquor, a slight hint of orange peel, a touch of wood, lightly bitter. Decent body, soft to average carbonation.

Cask at Craft 100. It pours cloudy golden with a small white head. The nose is creamy, sherry, berry skin, odd coriander aspect, perfumed, light vanilla and stone fruit. The taste is bitter, soft fruits, spice, whisky, medicinal, hay, some astringency, drying wood, light alcohol and berry skin with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Nose is a bit off-putting. Interesting...
