Orach Slie (or “Golden Nectar”) is matured in casks from the multi-award-winning, family-owned Glenfarclas Distillery. In contrast to the punchy, dark Ola Dubhs aged in casks from the wild isles of Orkney, Orach Slie is a much lighter, easy-going beer that reflects the softer, sweeter malts of Glenfarclas which nestles in the rolling Speyside moors of Banffshire. Having trialled a variety of different beers, the brewers settled on a lightly-hopped, high-abv version of Schiehallion to perfectly complement the classic, honeyed-sherry malts of Glenfarclas.

Orach Slie pours a light straw colour and immediately displays a delicate malty character on the nose. It has a surprisingly robust, chewy mouthfeel that belies its light appearance, coating the palate with gentle-sweetness which in turn gives way to a pleasantly-bitter, drying (and slightly tangy) finish.

(Bottle, 0.33 l - bottle #17120 - bottled on Feb 2014, at One Pint Pub, 20140727) The beer poured golden and clear. Aroma had metallicness, wood and vanilla. Palate was quite light bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were grass, metallicness, malts, wood, vanilla and bitterness. Afteraste had wood, vanilla, metallicness and bitterness. A weird experiment. Not my thing.

Bottle at home, It pours clear golden-yellow with a small white head. The nose is soft, sherry, vanilla, wood, doughy and sweet grain. The taste is crisp, straw, honey, dried apricot, toast, some bitterness, pepper, wood and touch of alcohol with a dry finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. All quite mellow and pretty well-balanced. I rather like it.

Bright clear gold beer, few white bubbles trying to be a head. Palate is light and semi dry. Modest carbonation. Light pale malt with oaky vanilla sweetness. Mild floralness and a whisper of dried fruits. Light finish. Not bad.

330ml bottle from Drinkmonger. Pours clear honey gold, short-lived head. High carbonation. Aromas are whisky, dried fruit, light vanilla. Taste is more whisky. Too much for me. One-dimensional. OK.
