A visit to Be Hoppy after a tour of the Prado in Madrid yielded this 440 ml can. The proprietor of the shop said it was too new a beer for him to opine on. All that is okay, no problem, I bought it, not a cheap beer, not expensive either. My question to him was why is it called an American Barleywine? A shrug. Here we are two months later, I will attempt to determine the nuances of an American Barleywine. I’ve a globe glass ready after a previous tasting, can is open and I pour. The body is an interesting amber and brown in color with a skim of taupe foam. I smell syrup, grain and ripe fruit of some kind. The drink is straightforward for a barleywine. Bread, plums, raisins, wood and an alcohol content that will come back to bite me later. Decently all right beer. American Barleywine? I don’t know.

Lots of caramel malt and toffee sweetness. Also an earthy, grassy undertone.
