This brew is based on a historic recipe from the 1640’s called Purl. Purl was also known as Wormwood Ale which included orange peel and leaves from the senna plant.

By the middle of the 19th century Wormwood was replaced with gin, sugar and other spices such as ginger and nutmeg, and this new Purl was sold on the Thames by Purl-Men from the Purl-Boats.

So how did we make our Purl? We took an all UK hop bill and then added 150 kilos of orange zest, adding just enough crushed ginger to give a gentle kick. The brilliant heat from the ginger compliments the sweet bitterness from the orange peel adds to the mellow, spicy backbone of our all British malt bill.

Cask at Craft 100, Clapham, Saturday, 25th March 2016 in the company of Lynn, Barry, Jaqui and Simon. Woah this is really fragrant, orange blossom, orange oil, really perfumey. Tasty decent beer, it also reminds me a little of a orange oil version of parma violets sweets. Good. A7 A4 T7 P3 Ov14 3.5

Keg @ 57 Thomas Street, Manchester. Hazy amber with a thin head. Has a crispness with the ginger dominating both aroma and taste, being more stated in the latter.
