This brew is based on a historic recipe from the 1640’s called Purl. Purl was also known as Wormwood Ale which included orange peel and leaves from the senna plant.

By the middle of the 19th century Wormwood was replaced with gin, sugar and other spices such as ginger and nutmeg, and this new Purl was sold on the Thames by Purl-Men from the Purl-Boats.

So how did we make our Purl? We took an all UK hop bill and then added 150 kilos of orange zest, adding just enough crushed ginger to give a gentle kick. The brilliant heat from the ginger compliments the sweet bitterness from the orange peel adds to the mellow, spicy backbone of our all British malt bill.

Craft 100 at Craft Clapham. Cask. Almost clear gold beer, thin white head. Palate is light, semi dry and crisp. Super condition. Great tangerine and kunquat fruits into a little ginger with undertones of lemongrass and lime. Light airy finish. A flavoursome ale in great nick and a great palate revival.

Tap. Bundobust, Leeds. Hazy, dark gold. Messy, sticky, white head. Nose is all orange and ginger. No problem picking up the ingredients in this one! Some soapy, floral hoppage. Taste is sticky sweet. Some herbal, oily bitterness. Light body. Herby, oily finish. A curious brew, but certainly tasty. Probably go really well with the food in here, I reckon.

Cask gravity at Craft 100. It pours clear golden with a medium white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, bready, spice, grainy, pepper, orange, lemongrass and ginger. The taste is crisp, bitter, lemon, lemongrass, orange peel, ginger, peppery spice with a dry, slightly spiced finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Interesting and well-balanced for the style. Decent.
