This brew is based on a historic recipe from the 1640’s called Purl. Purl was also known as Wormwood Ale which included orange peel and leaves from the senna plant.

By the middle of the 19th century Wormwood was replaced with gin, sugar and other spices such as ginger and nutmeg, and this new Purl was sold on the Thames by Purl-Men from the Purl-Boats.

So how did we make our Purl? We took an all UK hop bill and then added 150 kilos of orange zest, adding just enough crushed ginger to give a gentle kick. The brilliant heat from the ginger compliments the sweet bitterness from the orange peel adds to the mellow, spicy backbone of our all British malt bill.

Can from Morrisons. Deep golden in colour, with a slight, white, head. Citrus hops, ripe orange fruit, light malts and a dryish finish. Good.

330ml can: BB 30th Feb 2020. Poured into a Forbidden Fruit chalice at home on 17th Oct 2019. Cloudy light orange body, white head, large at first then fading to a wisp and collar with lacing. Aroma has more peel than orange (what do Senna Plants smell of?). I am hoping the Senna doesn't work as a laxative? Is any actually in this? Anyway it tastes OK, a kind of liquid marmalade flavour I suppose, but with a bitter edge to it rather than a sweetness.

[33cl can from Morrisons Supermarket, Bracknell at 5.7% ABV.] A hazy pale amber pour with a loose white head; bitter orange aroma; sweetish malty body with oily orange flavours; and a pleasantly bitter citrus finish. Crisp and refreshing.

Keg at the Queens Road Tap, Leicester. Light gold, hazy with a very small and uneven white head. The orange in the aroma is surrounded by notes of candy sugar, lemon curd and pine. Taste is quite sweet even though the orange zest element is played down in favour of powdered sugar notes. Quite heavily carbonated. A very decent IPA.

Draft at Craft 100 Spring 2016 - Craft Beer Co. Clapham, London. Pours clear yellow-gold with a creamy, white head. Big, dominant lemongrass in the aroma. Light sweet flavour with notes of oily lemon, light gingerbread, grass, pale bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Sweet on the finish with more heavy lemongrass character and sugary dough. So so.
