Simple Means — Smoked Farmhouse Altbier. Altbier simply means “old beer” in German, and is traditional to the city and surrounding area of Düsseldorf, Germany. Altbier is a style that excites us because of its simplicity and drinkability. It’s easy to lose count of how many glasses of Altbier you’ve had in a session.
For our take on an Altbier, we felt the toasty notes from the malt played well with a fairly restrained dose of smoked malt. We added 23% beechwood smoked malt from Weyermann to a base of pale barley malt from Blacklands Malt. We then brewed with a fairly large dose of Perle hops at the start of the boil to keep the acidity in the beer from mixed culture fermentation at bay. Overall, Simple Means is an exercise in simplicity and restraint and is just good beer for drinking in our opinion.

750mL bottled 12/6/2016, batch 3, drunk 8/8/22. Clear, burnt umber with a sizeable, butter-tinted head that is creamy and well-retained. At first I thought it was far gone, but it turns out to be just some smoke and malt combinations producing vanilla and caramel. Fruitiness from malt and yeast with light brett and low acidity. Peppery, smokey and with a light amount of oxidation, well-earned at this age. No flaw or alcohol. Soft, malty, moderately-to-lightly smokey with pepper, caramel, raisin, vanilla and mild red fruit. Some oxidation, but again, nothing intense for this age. Mildly tart, but also sweet with sticky prune and raisin lingering alongside strong minerality. Would like to and will try a fresher bottle at some point, but this was very well-done.

Bottle. Gusher. Color: Hazy dark brown, frothy light brown head. Aroma: Malt, yeast, smoke, hints of dark fruit. Taste: Moderate sweet and moderate to above moderate tart, light bitterness. Dark malt, slightly roasted, some smoke, some dark dried fruit, citrus and funk. Pretty smooth, dry-ish mouthfeel. Medium body, just below average carbonation. Interesting, pretty unique taste for a beer. Hard to get associations with German Alt at first, but getting some at the finish. Like an Alt this beer hardly has pronounced flavours, but it is enjoyable. Personally I would say this is a Wild / Sour Ale style.

On tap @Luppolo Station (Rome). Bruna/ambrata carica, intensa, schiuma bianca media, discretamente persistente. Al naso note di malto, erbaceo, medicinale, leggero affumicato. In bocca ha un attacco abboccato con finale acidulo, erbaceo, medicinale, lieve affumicato. Corpo medio, carbonazione media. Originale e buonissima!

Can’t say I’m a fan of the smoke-sour flavor combo, what with the tart berry-citrus front end smashing up against a savory smokiness, underlined by a grassy baseline and a mild carame sweet note coupled with a yeasty fade. A well-made beer, just not something I’m enjoying.
