All the attributes of an American IPA but it’s black. Do your eyes deceive you? Have you fallen down the rabbit hole? Take in the fresh pine hop aroma then savour the complex malt palate typical of an IPA but then come the subtle hints of dark chocolate and burnt toast to give the game away. This is not a heavy beer, but smooth and incredibly drinkable, a new beer style worthy of praise.

Half-pint, cask ale at Castle Tap. Shared with Finn. A deep ruby glint to a off-black body, low beige head. Roasted malty smell, hint of pine. Dark malty favours offset by pine needles. Rounded ending, malt-fruity. Clean on the swallow. Pleasing to a certain degree. (Reading 20.10.2019).

Delt med Rune. Svart. Så vidt litt skum langs glasset. Lett sjokoladearoma. Smaken litt karamell & røstet malt. Tørr avslutning.

Cask @ Old Bank, Turku
Aroma has fruity hops, grapefruit, some licorice and resiny tones. Flavour has resin, grapefruit, nettles, licorice, hints of ash and minerals. Also salmiac. Ashy finish. Most likely the first black IPA I am having from cask. Not bad, but could be less ashy. Also, this gets some bush leaves & vegetable tones after some sips.

Dark brown. Toasty nose with dark sugars and a little bit of grapefruity hop. Mouthfeel is a bit slick. Taste is a little dark malt sweetness, a little bit of hop fruitiness. Fairly light example, fits with the English context but is less effective overall than the bigger interpretations of the concept.

Cask at the Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. Poured a deep mahogany colour with a bubbly light tan head. The aroma is rich malt and liqourice. The flavour is medium to strong bitter with a liqourice, treacle, citrus fruit, spicy hop palate. A black IPA? I guess it’s getting there but it’s very much an Anglicised version.

The hand-pulled pint in ’The White Hart’ Shifnal on the 21 Aug 2013 looked very interesting: black and moody, with a full beige coloured creamy head that gave of some impressive lacing. Roasted/toasted malt aroma and taste: some hints of chocolate and semi-sweet caramel melting over a wood fire. Not as rich or creamy as it first looks indicated, but this is still a fine beer and the body suited the alcohol level and overall flavours. Different and pleasant from start to finish.
