The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

Malty as all hell, with a caramel apple undertone, this amber is definitely interesting, if not good. This brew reminds me more of an English Pale Ale than an amber, thanks to that strong fruitiness that gums things up. Minimal hops keep things on the sweet side, and the beer has a curious finish that once again seems quite British. Eh.

Slightly hazy amber beer. Light off white head. Light malt nose. Softish palate. Light malt with subtle smoke. On top is dry and very mild orangey hop. Finishes soft and a little dry. Doesn’t hang together for me.

Tap @ THE Steakout Saloon. Four years ago, I was drinking this constantly. It’s been awhile since I burned out on it. Pours a dark, clear copper appearance with an off white head with poor head retention. Sweet caramel malty, a bit dark citrus fruity, pear, earthy aroma. Apple, pear, light toffee, a bit toasty caramel malty flavor. Ehhh, not as tasty as I remembered.

May 2010: I have fond memories of this beer, on tap many years ago (before BA and RB were around), at the Chena Hot Springs Resort up in Alaska, I wonder if they still have it? Anyway, I saw it at Pay and Take in Flagstaff, while checking out their beer fridges and grabbed a bottle to be drank in the windless sunspot they have outside. I am a big fan of Alt beers (even if they aren’t brewed in Dusseldorf). This one doesn’t let the style down one iota. Looked good, that reddish tint to its clear body, on top sat the regular tanned/off-white head most Alts have. The smell was mildly malty, as it should be and the taste was just perfect for the first beer of my 2nd ’allocated drinking days’ during our US road tour. Really pleased to have re-found this beer, most likely be years before we are reaquainted, a great pity because it is a well made beer in a style many brewers find difficult to produce (outside the Dusseldorf area).

A reddish amber ale with a thick mocha head. In aroma, loads of biscuitty malt. maple, herbal hops, nice. In mouth, a smooth almost vinous malt, honey, smooth, very nice. Shared with Mike and friends, April 1, 2012.

Bottle. Amber with a light brown head that disappears. Aroma of caramel, vanilla, nuts. Quite carbonated and it doesn’t suit. Taste is sweet with caramel, some nuts. Spicy bitterness creeps up to balance. Some astringency and metal from the excessive carbonation.

Sampled from bottle. Poured a reddish amber color, small white head. Aroma was light caramel, grains. Nothing offensive about this one, but a bit standard. This one was better than I expected, but nothing to call home about.

Bottle: Poured a clear amber with a off white head. Aroma is full of malt. Taste is malt and even a light alcohol burn. Some grit in the finish.

Draught, Toronado, San Francisco. Copper colour with a tan head. Sweet malts predominated in the nose and flavour. Pretty watery palate with a sllight metallic tang. Very underwhelming and not a particularly good interpretation of the style. Next !
