Curled up with a good book or cutting through whitecaps in your trusty canoe, there is simply nothing better than the companionship of a loyal, loving dog. We know from experience – our dogs come with us wherever we go (including to work at the brewery every day).

Taking this bond to heart, we first brewed our award-winning American Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog. Years later, it remains a stalwart example of the style, beloved across New England for its distinct and refreshing flavor. When the occasion calls for something big on flavor but without the hop punch, Old Brown Dog is an unbeatable choice.

Reliable and robust, playful and adventurous, it’s the beer we reach for no matter where we’re headed – just like our trusty pup.

Bottle shared with JMD at HNB 24.01.15. Muddy brown. Small, pale brown head. Not much lacing. Some aroma of brittle, dark caramel and dark malt. Similar taste, with hints of unfermented wort. Low bitterness, but high drinkakability.

Cask at gbbf 2015 day 4. Nice reddy amber coloured pour with a fading loose greyish head. Aroma is dry candied ginger, spicy wood, bit odd. Some pine needle hop on the nose as well. Flavour is composed of nutty grains, faint toasted bread, wood, some stale malts, ginger. Palate is light, semi sweet, lowish carbonation. OK, maybe not in great condition

Bottle from Signal Variety, Plaistow NH. Aroma is bread, cereal malt, hint of caramel. Appearance is clear light amber color with minimal head, fair sparkle, minimal lacing. Taste is moderately sweet. Palate is medium bodied with thick texture with average carbonation that gives a little zing to the tip of the tongue. Not much finish. Overall, a drinkable brown ale. It’s not complex and it’s not terribly strong, but competent.

Pours a brown from a bottle, khaki head. Smells thin somehow, some caramel in the nose. Tastes like soda, overly fizzy, some roastiness, almost smoky meatiness. Too thin and fizzy for my taste. Meh.

Bottle: Hazy, Brown coloured, small persistent off-White layer; dry nose of toasted malt and herbal hops with a certain fruitiness in the Background; moderate bitter-sweet flavour, medium bodied; lingering and drier bitter finish with subdued traces of dark malt and caramel. Good, yes...
