Curled up with a good book or cutting through whitecaps in your trusty canoe, there is simply nothing better than the companionship of a loyal, loving dog. We know from experience – our dogs come with us wherever we go (including to work at the brewery every day).
Taking this bond to heart, we first brewed our award-winning American Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog. Years later, it remains a stalwart example of the style, beloved across New England for its distinct and refreshing flavor. When the occasion calls for something big on flavor but without the hop punch, Old Brown Dog is an unbeatable choice.
Reliable and robust, playful and adventurous, it’s the beer we reach for no matter where we’re headed – just like our trusty pup.

Bottle, at the pig, DC. A clear, light brown beer with a small, dense, beige head. Nutty, toffee aroma with a bready touch. Some dark dried fruits in the flavor, with toffee, nuts and caramel. It’s medium to full bodied, nicely carbonated. A decent and easy drinkable beer. 150619

12 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark amber brown with a medium beige head. Nose brings out dark fruits, toasted malt, and toasted bready caramel. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted caramel bready malt, some dark fruits, and toasted nuts. Pretty robust for a brown ale, with a dry toasted finish. Very good.

Draught at Taphouse. Slightly hazy amber colour with a lazing, white head. Toasted aroma with caramel, fruits, subtle liqourice, citrus. Taste is lightly bitter. Medium body, creamy texture. Finishes dry and toasted with caramel malts. Nice brown ale.

A: Crystal clear copper/mahogany. Sort of pale for a brown. No visible carbonation. Half finger of quickly dissipating head. Nice lacing though. S: Mild chocalate, caramel or is it toffee? Very slight roastiness. No discernible hop presence in the nose. T: Immediately roasty, chocalatey and surprisingly almost no sweetness. I dislike a lot of sweetness in beer but I miss a little of it in this style. A nice subtle hop tartness on the finish compensates nicely here though. M: Medium body with a good amount of finely beaded carbonation to tingle the tongue. Sticky finish but still pretty clean overall. O: Another good brown ale I’ve come across lately. Comparing this to Duck Rabbit Brown and slightly favoring DR due largely to a lower ABV. Very good overall though and well worth purchasing.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, best before 6/1/2015. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, nuttiness, chocolate, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, nuttiness, herbal, floral, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, nuttiness, chocolate, and herbal/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and robustness of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent brown ale style. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Tap at Beer Hunters. Deep copper color, good off-white creamy head. Caramel and herbal grassyness in the nose. Light-bodied to medium-bodied. Caramel, some earthy hoppyness. Some alcohol. A bit odd cellary notes.

(Keg at Kaisla, 20141222) The beer poured dark brown and clear. Its head was medium sized and lightly brown. Aroma had caramel, molasses and something metallic. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, molasses, grass, caramel and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A harsher brew that I would like a brown ale to be.

bottle from Bierpost. Copper brown colour, mid-soized off-white head. Malty nose. Malty with some roasted malts, dates, figs, prunes and some shy but good aromatic hops in the finish. Pleasant.
