Curled up with a good book or cutting through whitecaps in your trusty canoe, there is simply nothing better than the companionship of a loyal, loving dog. We know from experience – our dogs come with us wherever we go (including to work at the brewery every day).
Taking this bond to heart, we first brewed our award-winning American Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog. Years later, it remains a stalwart example of the style, beloved across New England for its distinct and refreshing flavor. When the occasion calls for something big on flavor but without the hop punch, Old Brown Dog is an unbeatable choice.
Reliable and robust, playful and adventurous, it’s the beer we reach for no matter where we’re headed – just like our trusty pup.

(bottle, 35.5cl) Hazy, copper to brown colour with a short and slightly tanned foamy head. Moderately toasted malty aroma with notes of caramel, nuts and a tinge of chocolate, accompanied by herbal hops. Mildly bitter and delicately sweet flavour, medium to light bodied with a moderate carbonation. Dry-ish and mildly bready toast-malty taste with hints of toffee, traces of chocolate and herbal hoppy spice in the background; toasty and hop bitter finish with a mildly malty sweetness and notes of chocolate in the aftertaste. 01.IX.14

Nice to be finding some old Shuttle beers.

This was poured into a pint glass several times and mugs several times. The only I could ever find was the head always seems to last longer in the mug. Don’t ask me why- I didn’t make it. Here goes.
The appearance was the obvious color -- uh brown right (insert sarcastic wink here). There’s a decently smooth one finger white to off white foamy head that really takes its time to settle into the beer. The lacing left in the wake of the dieing head is somewhat foamy.
The smell was always magical for a brown ale as some light nutty caramel and toffee malts danced around specks of a roasty sort of chocolate malts.
The taste was mainly sweet and roasty allowing the nuts to maintain a decently healthy flavoring arousing my taste buds to waken to pure brown ale bliss.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a superb sessionability about it. To make a beer this dark and still be as sessionable as it is shows much respect to the brewer. I have always loved how gently this rolls across my mouth and tongue.
Overall, this is Smuttynose’s best in my opinion and was the Brown Ale that got me hooked on brown ales other than Bell’s. Someday, I hope to get back to the distro of this beer. Brown ale fans, this is one not to pass up.

355ml bottle at home. Pours clear brown with little to no head, doesn’t last. Aromas of light chocolate, fruity hops, dark sugar. Taste is more hop-bitter than an English brown ale, but nice, and with a rounded sweet finish. Texture a little thin, but nice bitter finish.
