Known as “rauchbier” in Germany, smoke-flavored beers were virtually unknown in the U.S. until Alaskan Smoked Porter was developed in 1988.
History
Introduced in 1988, Alaskan Smoked Porter has been credited with helping inspire an American revival of smoked beers. Alaskan Smoked Porter is one of the most award-winning beers in the history of the Great American Beer Festival and a perennial winner at the World Beer Cup.
Alaskan Smoked Porter may be enjoyed with smoked seafood, cheese and other robust foods and as an after-dinner drink. It pairs beautifully with everything from bleu cheese to vanilla ice cream and raspberries. This unique beer is also a wonderful flavoring ingredient in sauces, seafood dishes and even cheesecake.

Dark brown with a frothy, light beige head. Aroma full of burnt grains with undertones of woodsmoke and dark chocolate. Taste is roasted bitter the whole way through. Full-bodied, mild carbonation, a touch oily, smooth. A very rich, malt-forward porter with the smoke playing a background role. Nice.

Draft at the brewery in Juneau, Alaska. Pitch black color with a small beige head. As expected, it has a smoky aroma with a hint of molasses. I taste the smoked flavor, but not much porter flavor. Light molasses flavor too, which becomes more pronounced as it warms. Medium body and low carbonation. Low bitterness for 45 IBU.

Smoke and roast. Pretty good balance. As an old school top beer, not sure it holds up to newer examples of the style, but it's decent. Black pour with decent head and lacing. Bittersweet finish. Bottle.
