Known as “rauchbier” in Germany, smoke-flavored beers were virtually unknown in the U.S. until Alaskan Smoked Porter was developed in 1988.

History
Introduced in 1988, Alaskan Smoked Porter has been credited with helping inspire an American revival of smoked beers. Alaskan Smoked Porter is one of the most award-winning beers in the history of the Great American Beer Festival and a perennial winner at the World Beer Cup.

Alaskan Smoked Porter may be enjoyed with smoked seafood, cheese and other robust foods and as an after-dinner drink. It pairs beautifully with everything from bleu cheese to vanilla ice cream and raspberries. This unique beer is also a wonderful flavoring ingredient in sauces, seafood dishes and even cheesecake.

Bottle (9/18/12(!)) pour from trade with Johnnniee--thanks, John! Appearance is clear, dark brown (dark ruby with light source directly behind) with tons of sparkle at the edges of the glass, 2-finger-width creamy khaki head with good retention and trace lacing. Aroma is sweet malts along with noticeable complementary smoked wood. Taste is strong smoked wood (cedar?) mellowing to richer generic campfire smoke which dominates the roasted malt backbone. Mild dark fruit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with silky smooth texture, soft carbonation, mild alcohol warmth (which seems appropriate) and finish as taste. Overall, fairly unique amongst smoke beers--not necessarily wild about the initial blast of smoked wood, which is like cedar, and the overall smoke obscures the base beer but it mellows to a decent place and appears to have held up reasonably well so you really can age it. Lovely mouthfeel.

Bottle brought back from Alaska - many thanks to Jan! 2017 edition. Pours hazy black with a slowly diminishing, foamy, beige head. Aroma of smoked ham ('Schinken'), beef jerky, black tea, coffee ground, soy, chocolate, dried fig, tobacco leaves. Taste is light to medium malty sweet, restrained chocolate, nuts, pairing nicely with fig & sourish brambleberry; the core is smoky, umami, hints of black olive, ham & jerky, soft bitterness of tobacco & tea, restrained coffee & toast. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, smoky, more tobacco & chocolate. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Very rich & delicate, excellent balance between Smoked & Porter as promised...

I think this might be starting to go past its prime. Still heavy smokey of course, but seems to be missing some of the rich meatyness younger ones have, getting a bit flat. Smooth and ashy, really fun to try one this old.
