Our friends over at Kentucky’s own Willett Distillery have one kind of barrel: wood. And they put two things in them: Bourbon and Rye. We were fortunate enough to get some of their Bourbon barrels, and we put a special coffee-fied version of our Imperial Stout in them.

2019 bottle, opened and rated early 2020. Murky black body with red-brown highlights; thin to medium deep brown head. Nose of oak, whisky, soy and cocoa; complex, layered, and prickly with boozy heat. Viscous, chewy body with whisky, oak, a soy/umami tanginess, and chocolate. Some sherry-like oxidation. Finishes with a warming punch. Yum yum yum yum yum.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a deep brown to black with a finger of brown foam that lingers. Peppery rye, chocolate, coffee and bourbon on the nose. Oaky palate with more chocolate and spicy rye notes. Drying finish.

Bottle from La Riviera in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brn/blk with a creamy tan head. Aromas of good coffee and rye spice. Full bodied. Flavor of dark toasted/burnt malt, rye spice and good coffee. Some oak too that's not old and musty. Not dry, and not bitter - but the heat and rye substitute for hop bitterness. This has great flavors.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours dark brown with a foamy/bubbly tan head. Aroma of rye whiskey, chocolate, dark treacly malt and I think some coffee. Wow. Full bodied. Flavor is rye whiskey, chocolate, dark treacly malt and coffee. No heat in the mouth, but light burn down the gullet. It's far from dry, and the various flavors stand in for hop to calm the sugar. Very, very tasty ale. Just excellent.

Draught @ Cafe de Wijnhaven, Wijnhaven 22, 2611 CM Delft, Netherlands. [ As Lagunitas Willettized Coffee Stout ]. ABV: 12.9%. Clear dark dark brown colour with a small to average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, coffee, strong coffee, rich, chocolate, dark malt, sweet malt, dark fruit, raisin, plum, alcohol. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, rich, coffee, dark fruit, raisin, alcohol, chocolate, dark malt, strong coffee. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is warming and light alcoholic. [20190925] 8-4-8-4-16

355ml bottle. Smooth, soft, oaky and bourbony with some vanilla, coffee, chocolate and cocoa. Pretty soft and balanced. Nice.
