The story of Wernesgrüner begins in 1436 when the Schorer brothers receive the right to brew in Wernesgrün. In 1589 followed by the Gläser brewery. The first centuries were very eventful - and marked by numerous changes of ownership of both breweries. Until the 18th century, when the Günnel and Männel families took over what was then still separate property. After the war, both families were expropriated in the years that followed and their breweries were combined in 1974 to form the VEB Exportbierbrauerei Wernesgrün. After German reunification, the company traded as the Wernesgrüner Brewery, was privatized in 1994 and has been part of the Bitburger Brewery Group since 2002.
