Fairly boring brown ale, simultaneously sweet and bland, with a mild nutty backbone offset by damp grain and a tiny bit of hop bitterness. Pours brown. Smells brown. Feels kinda brown. Very brown. Also very forgettable.

Bottle from Craft Brewed. Pours a deep chestnut brown to black with a finger of beige head that dissipates quickly. Lots of dry cocoa powder in the nose with some straight ahead coffee ground aromas. Dry on the palate with cocoa, roasted cacao nib and faint cream notes. Lingering roasted coffee and bitterness.

Bottle thanks to Blake. Pours black with small beige head that diminishes to nothing. The aroma is intense coconut, wood, bourbon, roast. Slick body, milk chocolate, coconut, oak, boozy, very good.

On tap at Blackstone, pours a dark brown with a reddish tinge and medium beige head. Aroma reveals toasted malt upfront, with a hint of cocoa. Flavour is along the same lines, with toasted malt, a hint of cocoa and even lighter roast. Nicely balanced, with a fairly dry finish. Nice one.

6.1
Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 7 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 5.5

On tap at Blackstone, pours black with a tiny head. Nose is loaded with coconut extract upfront, with little else to speak of. Flavour is pure coconut extract, with light vanilla and not much of the barrels discernible. Not feeling the coconut addition here - it's aggressive but lacking elegance or depth.

On tap at Blackstone, pours black with a tiny head. Nose is decadent, with loads of barrel character, complex bourbon and vanilla. Flavour is so elegant and complex, with heavy bourbon barrels, vanilla, booze and chocolate. Viscous as hell on the mouthfeel, with no let-up on the intensity. Lovely brutal BA beer that destroys the tastebuds in the best of ways.

On tap at Blackstone, pours black with a small tan head. Aroma brings out medium roasted malt and potent espresso. Flavour reveals a dry earthy coffee character upfront, followed by medium roasted malt and light sweetness. Earthy, dry and coffee-dominated on the finish. Very nicely done.

Appearance - 4 | Aroma - 6 | Flavor - 6 | Texture - 4 | Overall - 6

On tap at Blackstone, pours a clear dark red (strange colour for a black IPA) with a small beige head. Aroma reveals dry toasted malt and light resinous hops. Flavour is subdued on the toasted malt, with bitter dry hopping. This really lack body for the style, but is still pleasant. Needs amping up.

On tap at Blackstone, pours a clear copper with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out toasted caramel, some butter and resinous hops. Flavour is jumbled, with earthy hops, some butter, and biscuity malt. Not a cohesive or well-coordinated beer. Flawed but drinkable.
