Beautiful deep blond color. An ordinary Pilsner, without the necessary hop character, a bit papery. Quite high metallic bitterness.

On tap at Summit Tavern in Atlanta. Clear brown color with an average sized white head. Aroma comes on as it warms providing some malt and fruitiness. Although the palate isn’t qite as rich and chewy as I like my Dubbels to be, this provides a nice easy drinking brew that delivers some nice malt and fruit flavors on a palate that is light and never heavy. Smooth and very drinkable.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black stout with dark brown foamy head with medium retention. Aroma is comprised of chocolate with strong malt and some subtle coffee in the back. Taste is very enjoyable with some chocolate being easily noticeable with again strong malt and a coffee and bitter ending. Very fine beer for those last cold winter days…

Bottle. Shiny clear chestnut colour. Malty and sweet caramelly flavour with peppery caramel aftertaste. Might be a bit cloying if not for the generous carbonation.

Bottle. Appearance: medium copper, small head that fades quickly. Smell is sweet malty, a bit earthy/dirty. Flavor is earthy/dirty/grassy/slightly malty. Nothing special or even tasty here. Drinkable, but why bother? Not the best offering by Brooklyn.

Had this one on draft at Smokin Joe’s in Pittsburgh. It poured a caramel color with a small tan head. The aroma was sweet molasses and caramel. The flavor was sweet, sugary, and had some molasses, caramel and light fruit. A subdued hop presence was in the background. The mouthfeel was reasonably thick. Reminded me very strongly of Maredsous Double.

On draught @ Redbones Feb 2005. Yellow-gold body, lightly hazy, small white head, decent retention. Aroma of clove, bubble gum, a touch of honey and lightly dry hops. Flavor begins with a big Belgian Witbier sort of thing. Bubble gum, sugar and coriander. Not sure why they thought making this a wibier would be much like a saison, as it’s not. Not much to identify this as a saison. A bit of a belgian yeastiness as it warms, but not much else. Good, but not a saison.

On draught at Anam Cara Feb 2005. Ruddy brown color, tans and mahogany tinges throughout, transluscent body and a small off-white head. Smells of brown sugar, caramel, raisins and light barley. Flavor is sweet, lightly sticky texture, with vanilla and an ever so slight amount of coffee. Medium-light body is my biggest complaint, but for a sweeter, dark malted session type ale, it’s quite good. Moderate carbonation, low hops profile.

Rated 1/31/05 from bottled dated "Best before Mar 04." Despite it’s age, it’s still an excellent original English version of an IPA: well-hopped but not overdone. Pours a mellowed amber color under a quarter inch head. Hop character is citrusy, not puckery. Manages a good caramel malt taste. Holds up very well, and thanks to DocLock for this trade last year.
