Description
Bastone first opened its doors in May of 2004. It is named and styled after the famous Belgian city (though the spelling has been simplified). This unique restaurant and brewery is housed in a 1930’s era building, the exterior of which has been restored to it’s original art deco look in association with the State of Michigan Historical Society. Inside, the high arched ceiling, wood floors and white subway wall tiles create the comfortable yet sophisticated atmosphere of a European brasserie.
Admin Note: Taproom and restaurant are now run by Jolly Pumpkin, but Bastone beers can be found in the Jolly Pumpkin Royal Oak location. Bastone still brews in the brewery attached.

2004 Draught. Moderately to heavily hazy. A warm orange with red tinges, slightly pale around the edges. Small white head, mostly disippating. Aroma has plenty of alpha hops, light belgian yeast. A light hint of toasty malt in the background, provides decent balance, but the hops are amazingly high in alpha content (cascades) and turns this in to a hybrid of an american pale and a belgian pale. Interesting, but I’m not sold yet, could use some more malt and yeast.

2004 draught. Pours with an incredible amount of sediment. Thickly cloudy, opaque. Color of orange peels, golden-orange with some lighter yellows. Small thin head, light amount of lacing. Aroma has some light citric notes, a hint of dry coriander and yeast. Flavor is very dry, crisp, lightly tart and has plenty of coriander. Light lemon peel on the finish with a bit of sharpness from the yeast. Coarse and grainy, with a touch of thinning as it warms.
