Description
Mike Hess Brewing is one of the premier craft breweries of San Diego. We set out with a mission to bring people together over great beer and were early on in the craft beer revolution. We were the region’s 33rd brewery back in 2010 when our first location, then a nano-brewery, in Miramar was opened. Now, in our 10th year, we have 5 locations in California, including the “OG” spot, which has since tripled in size!

473ml can. Minimally cloudy, yellow-ish, pale golden colour with small, frothy to creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Husky, malt-spicy, slightly herbal aroma, a touch of citrusy hops. Taste is slightly citrusy hoppy, minimally sweet pale malty, decent hop bitterness. Better than the usual gnat’s piss covered by this style.

473ml can [6.3% abv]. Clear, dark amber colour with small to average, thick, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Caramel malty aroma, a touch of toffee. Taste is minimally sweet malty, some caramel, some toffee, a touch of marzipan and hazelnut, minimally biting hop bitterness as counterweight, maybe a very cautious touch of red berries; very late hints of citrusy hop. You don’t get full caramel, toffee and marzipan flavours in three parallel strands, there’s rather on strand, yarned out of "something like" or portions of caramel, toffee and marzipan (or, more technically speaking, we come upon an adjunction, not a conjunction, of caramel etc.).

GBBF Day 4. Cask. Hazy gold beer, small pale cream colour head. Palate is light and crisp. Good condition. Vegetal green hot chilli totally dominates here. There are touches of dried fruits and fruit sweetness but it’s all about the chilli. Light dry finish and a very long chilli burning linger. Way too over spiced.

Gravity dispense at GBBF ’14, day 4, 15/08/14. Clear golden with a moderate off white covering. Nose is mango forward, chilli kick, juicy citric peel, spice, earthy hop. Taste carries quite the serrano burn but not OTT, tempered with mango pulp, papaya, grapefruit, juicy hop rinse. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with a chilli burn. Decent enough, does what it says on the tin, think it would have been better via keg dispense.

22 oz. bottle, pours a cloudy orange with a small beige head. Aroma is heavy on the caramel malts, with a big resinous hop backing, and light residual sugars. Flavour is huge on both the caramel malts and resinous hops, with just enough residual sugar and not too much to make it cloying. Great beer.

Poured up on tap at the Papago Hopageddon event where it exhibits a crystal clear gold body that supports a thin white head of foam. The aroma is full up chili pepper meat and skin and I have to strain to pull up slivers of sweet beer notes. The taste is similar where it is all big pepper blows, one after the other, and then you wait for the heat to start to kick your teeth in but it never does. This is just big bold chili pepper meat flavor with really zero capsicum burn. It would be interesting if some IPA shown through but it really doesn’t. If you’re in the mood for chili peppers and no painful burn then this is for you. Fun beer.

Cask at Great British Beer Festival 2014, Olympia, London. This one was with mango and serrano peppers so maybe it should under a new beer. An amber coloured pour with a thin white head on top. Green chilli, pepper aroma. Tastes similar, peppers, chilli, slightly fruity and spicy. More like something from pizza hut! A fun beer to try nevertheless.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours light gold with a creamy white head. Aroma seems to start orange, but quite of waft of honey quickly overwhelmed that. Med body or nearly. Flavor is wheat pretty much dominated by a sweet honey flavor which might harbor some orange. It doesn’t finish very sweet, and the orange finally stands up to provide a little bitter. A well done honey ale.

Can from Bine & Vine. Pours orange amber with a slight head. Aroma seems light malt. Somewhat treacly? Nearly med body. Flavor is malty, touch of treacle, trace of hop, but something isn’t working for me. Not really much flavor, and what there is isn’t really attractive.

Can from Bottlecraft in SD at home. Bright translucent golden pour with thin creamy head. Looks great. Aroma is mango and pineapple - yum. Taste is similar but lighter than you'd think, despite being, as it says, high gravity. Good bitterness too. Nice palate - heavy enough and a smooth foaminess. Very pleasantly surprised.
