Description
Mike Hess Brewing is one of the premier craft breweries of San Diego. We set out with a mission to bring people together over great beer and were early on in the craft beer revolution. We were the region’s 33rd brewery back in 2010 when our first location, then a nano-brewery, in Miramar was opened. Now, in our 10th year, we have 5 locations in California, including the “OG” spot, which has since tripled in size!

Tap at the brewery - San Diego. ABV noted at 6.3%. Pours lightly hazy brown with a frothy white head. Bready, doughy brown bread in the nose with subtle toast. Medium sweet flavor with lightly toasted bread, some dough, mild earth, slight berries, toasty toffee. Medium bodied with fine carbonation and creamy texture. Sweet finish with subtle toasted leaf bitterness, toasty brown bread, light toffee and brown sugar. Very tasty, well balanced stuff.

Gravicask, took some time to fill my one-third pint glass, American bar, GBBF 2013. Patchy surface. Declining tan-coloured head. Grainy with a vanilla touch to the nose. Dark fruits, coffee, vanilla and bourbon flavours. Strong bittersweet ending. Velvety in the mouth. Delicious slow sipper with warming alcohol. Among my best at the festival (London Olympia 14.08.2013).

Gravity dispense at GBBF ’13, 15/08/13. Cheers to Ronny for the pour. Pitch black with a dirty tan head that clears to a swirl. Nose is roast malt, chocolate, oaky wood, bourbon tones. Taste comprises dark toffee fudge, vanilla, light bourbon, dark fruits, chocolate. Full bodied, fine carbonation, light roast and a pinch of spice in the finish. Good stuff, well balanced, nice touch of spice in the finale to balance the sugars.

Cask at Great British Beer Festival 2013. Poured an oily black with no real head. Aroma of sweet caramel, vanilla, bourbon and cough mix. Very sweet flavour; milk chocolate, coconut, dark syrup and liquorice. Fades into more of the same with some alcohol. Way too sweet for me.

GBBF Day 2. Opaque dark brown beer, little pale tan head. Palate is smooth and a little dry. Big fruity bourbon. Touch of vanilla wood. Whisper of ester. Mostly this dark fruity bourbon. Light bourbon spice. Whisper of dark chocolate. Fruity!
