Dark brown with a moka head. Light chocolate and grassy aroma. Sweet malt and boiled corn, no chocolate and light caramel. Light and boring.

Yellow beer with slight chalky aroma. Light malt in little hops in mouth. Boring wee. Bottle. CNY Brewfest Feb. 5 2005.

I can not believe that it has taken me this long to get around to rating this beer. My father and I found this beer a little over a decade ago. It has been his beer of choice since then. For me it remains the best beer that I can generally find in most restaurants that do not have good selection. Better than your typical macro swill, but still lacking in character to the decent micros out there. The bottle I rated today was green - a minor sin to be sure. The beer poured a medium amber color with a large white head. The aroma is sweet and lightly malty. The flavor is sweet, lightly malty and has a hint of nut. The finish is a bit sour and tangy which is a minor detraction for the beer. Overall it is drinkable and at least in PA it is widely available. If a restaurant has nothing as good or better than Yuengling traditional lager I just avoid getting beer there. Sadly for all the positives the enduring image of Yuengling for me is when my German roomate found this in our fridge and could not stop laughing for days. Evidently Yuengling is German for "male virgin". Sigh.

Sampled from a 12 oz can this beer poured a light golden color with a large yellow-white head. The aroma is tangy and has a moderate floral and perfumey hop note. The flavor is lightly sour, bitter, had light perfumey hops and was a bit metallic. The finish is medium length perfumey and bitter. Medium body Ok.

For years I did not think that I liked porters - this was because the only porter I had ever tried was from Yuengling. This was of course way back in my less adventurous days. Since then I have developed a mild liking for the style though it still is not one of my preferred beer styles. So it occurred to me that as my tastes have somewhat changed - that perhaps I should revisit the first porter I ever had. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a reddish black color with a large brown head. The aroma is malty and mildly vegetal. The flavor is weaker in malt than I would have expected from a porter. It was also sour and bitey. There was only a mild hint of chocolate. No real character to speak of. Just poor sour malt and bitterness. Time and an expanded palate have not improved this beer in my esteem.
