Description
Established in 2006, with a 3 vessel 30 bbl brewery originally capable of making over 5,000 bbls (now upwards of 15,000 bbls) of beer each year, the new brewing company set about shaking up the craft brewing world with two distinct beer lines: the aggressive San Diego / West Coast styles under the Port Brewing label, and a Belgian-inspired series carrying the “Lost Abbey” name.
Today Port Brewing continues at the vanguard of craft brewing, ranked as one of the top 10 new breweries in the nation by both industry experts and enthusiasts alike, driven in large part by its extraordinary Lost Abbey beers and a library of 1000+ plus oak bourbon, brandy, sherry, and wine barrels that comprise one of the most remarkable barrel-aging programs for a craft brewery of any size.

On tap at The Church, pours a clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out resinous hops, bready malt and a hint of toasted caramel. Flavour is dry and fairly bitter, with bready malt, light resins, and generic bitterness. The hops are felt via the bitterness, but they're not all that fragrant or flavourful. Okay.

On tap at The Church, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma is full of dank, pot-like hops and biscuity malt. Flavour has a ridiculous amount of pot-like hops… that's insane. This is pure liquid pot. Needs better balance and a more dynamic range of flavours.

On tap at The Church, pours a deep dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out lots of toasted nuts, dried caramel, dark fruits and a little cocoa. Flavour is bold yet dry, with lots of leather, plenty of hops, cocoa, and toasted nuts. The body seems like it might be missing a little something, with a pronounced hoppiness. Finishes on notes of cocoa, leather and gentle dark dried fruit. Good but a little underwhelming.

On tap at The Church, pours a deep dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma brings out an army of pumpkin spices, gentle tartness, and an odd funk. Flavour is better than it smells, with lots of bugs, pumpkin spices, pumpkin pure, and some oak. Funky, spicy and lightly sweet. Somehow it's cohesive, but it's really not my thing. Decent experiment.

Black, lots of fluffy light brown head. Smells heavy roasty, dark coffee. Body isn't thick, but nicely soft, bit heavy finish. Taste is heavy on the roast, nicely bitter, loads of coffee, dark chocolate. Vanilla got lost with the ages, but no matter. Yum!
