It all started for us in 1997 when Brett VanderKamp believed that his hometown and the brewing industry were due for a shakeup. And so, New Holland Brewing Company was born in Holland, Michigan near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Today, New Holland is recognized as one of the leading innovators in the revolution of craft brewing and distilling. With nearly 500 team members, New Holland’s craft beer and spirits are sold across the country, and around the globe. Our retail presence continues to grow with two full-service restaurants, a spirits tasting room, two brick-and-mortar stores and an online store.

Bottled. Hazy amber, average head. Grapefruit aroma. Surprisingly soft and very hoppy - loads of Cascade here. Dryish and very drinkable with lasting intensely bitter finish. One-dimensional (which can be said about all beers in the style), but tasty and thirst quenching.

This beer is an opaque dark brown (almost black) color with a medium beige head that dissipates slowly. Thin curtain of lacing throughout the glass. The aroma is very roasty, with coffee and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied and closer in consistency to a Porter than a Stout. Roasted coffee at the forefront, with molasses, chocolate and some hops in the flavor. The finish is mildly bitter and roasty. Overall this is a pretty good Stout, but it is lacking richness.

This brew is a lightly cloudly brownish amber color. Medium light tan head and fair lacing. The aroma is a little musty with hops and citrus. Medium-bodied with hops, pine and citrus flavors. Kind of mild on the hops scale but a decent flavor profile altogether. The finish is bitter and lingering, with a touch of grapefruit. Overall a fairly worthwhile IPA, despite lacking punch.

As a full on beer geek, I am a little leery when a beer label brags about using a single solitary hop and just one malt. However this beer is not too bad at all, despite its simplicity. Pours a pale golden color with a miniscule off-white head. Thin lacing. Ther aroma is lightly hoppy with a pinch of citrus. Light-bodied and dry, with a back-to-basics hops and malt profile that is a refreshing flavor. There is also a tiny bit of fruitiness. The finish is crisp and dry. This beer won’t win any awards but I appreciate a straightforward easy-drinking beer that actually has flavor any day.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jul 9th, 2004: Pours a slightly cloudy amber color with a medium off-white head. Thin lacing throughout. The aroma is difficult to detect, light toasted malt and a hint of citrus. Medium-bodied and generally smooth, with malt, caramel and a bit of hops in the flavor. The finish is mildly bitter hops. Unfortunately the beer just doesn’t seem to be trying very hard to distinguish itself in any way. Passable overall but not really worth coming back to.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jul 9th, 2004: This brew is a bright yellow color with simmering carbonation and a thin white head. Thin lacing as well. The aroma is lightly spiced with some citrus. Light-bodied and crisp, with spices, citrus and toasted malt flavors. The finish is mildly bitter hops and citrus again. Fairly easy to drink but it doesn’t really stack up against the many exemplary beers of the style that are readily available.

Sampled at From The Vine beer tasting Jul 9th, 2004: Pours a rich yellow color with a thin and dense white head that did not last long. Minimal lacing. The aroma consists of tropical fruit and yeast. Light-bodied and on the carbonated side, with a spicy character and flavors of molasses, malt and citrus. The finish is semi-sweet spices with a touch of hops. On the shallow end of the Belgian pool but a decent beer regardless.

Pours a lightly hazy golden orange color with a medium thin white head. Thin lacing. The aroma is floral hops and citrus. Medium body with a nicely bitter character throughout. Hops, citrus and pine are all evident. It contains just a touch of sourness toward the end but nothing too bad. The finish is nicely hopped with a pinch of malt. Overall this is a solid APA.

2004 bottle. Pours a deep, thick, juicy yellow with a good creamy white head. Sediment at the bottom. Good complex aroma of lemon puff cookies, light belgian yeast, angel food cake, hints of lemon and cream. Flavor is similar to an Abbey Trippel with its lighter mouthfeel, sweet, yeasty flavors and hints of lemon, but there is a stronger sweet malt here, and the mouthfeel gets a bit too creamy and sweet. Light yellow fruit esters, good medium to medium full body. Even hints of goldings hops (or something similar) on the finish. Smooth and tastey, though a bit too much on the malting, IMHO.

2004 bottle. At first sniff I thought, cardboard soaked in wort. Hoped it wasnt another case of tasteless New Holland brew, a la Dragon’s Milk. Flavor provided somewhat of a relief. There is some balance here, very dry, rooty plant tasting hops and some lightly peppery ones as well, but very subtle. The malt is very dry and grainy. Lots of water. Oh ya, it also smelled like mineral water, and has a mineralesque water flavor to it as well. A hint of some fruit on the finish, too faint to really determine what. Maybe raspberry. Slight overcarbonation gives it a soda water feel. Strange buttery flat aftertaste. Hopefully black tulip is better. Looks a nice strawberry red, small fizzy head. Very filtered.
