Description
We’re proud to be a small, independent, family-owned business. Our founders Hamish Coates, Mel Holland and Colin Coates have stayed true to this for the entire life of the business.

With no outside investment or intervention, we make decisions based on what’s best for our staff, for our brewery and for the future of our planet.

This means that when it comes to doing the right thing, there are no shareholders or investors to answer to – we can just do it.

We are 100% independent, 100% family owned, and 100% of arguments are won by Ace – the dog!

Our farm and brewery take their name from a natural outcrop of ironstone that runs through the centre of our farm; “Rocky Ridge” perfectly sums up our slice of paradise and ironically sums up the somewhat rocky road that we are on as well.

Can. Very dark brown with a tan head that crackles to a cm. Aroma of mocha, brioche dough, interesting funky dark fruit that is presumably the grapes juice or skins. Feels quite alive. Mocha, bread and less fruity funk than suggested by the aroma but a bit of tannic (and oaky?) bite at the drying finish. Intriguing. I like that they have made it at a modest ABV and let the elements speak rather than shout.

The aroma pops worth loads of grapefruit and some tangerine, green apple and bread crumbs. Some stone fruit pops up in the mouth to dull the liveliness, and it finishes a tad shor. Bur it's a nice Summer afternoon delight.

Can. Almost clear gold with a loosish inch of white head. Aroma of grapefruit, some tropical fruit, pine, crackers. Light bodied without a whole lot to support the hops. Fairly bitter finish. A bit empty in the middle and a bit anonymous, but fine.

Can. Misted pale gold with an inch of white head. Nice but subdued aroma of grapefruit, white grapes, tinned passionfruit, crackers. More vibrant upon a swig. A little bread, citrus, melon, grapes, passionfruit. Green resinous notes creep in towards a dry bitter finish. Very good.

From a 375ml can on 29/3/2023. Pours a dark brown with a small thin head. Has a mild but pleasant choc coffee nose. However, the chocolate and coffee if much more prominent on the quite sweet sip, along with some strong caramel and a touch of vanilla. Finishes with a mild bitterness.Has a slick, slightly milky mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Has more than a bit of Founder's Breakfast Stout about it. Delicious.

Can. This is one they should have put in 250ml stubbies. But _no_, Black with a 2cm beige head. Lots of chocolate and some vanilla and caramel syrup in the aroma. Much lighter in body than expected. Still lots of chocolate but really brought to heel by slightly peppery bitterness. Only hints at its strength. Not really my thing but expertly balanced.

Can, bb tomorrow. Somewhat murky amber with a pale beige head that's soon a coat. Aroma of biscuit, toffee, slightly earthy spices. A little bit of body and quite involved biscuit and stone fruit flavours before moderate bitterness and earthy herbal spicy notes that are nice but could easily have been a bit much. Pretty good.

From a 375ml can on 10/11/2022. Pours a deep brown with a small to medium head. Has a light chocolate and coffee nose. Tastews of chocolate and coffee, with hints of caramel and maple. Has a lightly creamy body and moderate to average carbonation. A really tasty little stout which punches above its weight.
