At Shirayuki taproom/brewery. Part of the 780 yen tasting set, a great deal! A dark amber brown with a foamy beige head & like all the beers on tap here it has a big foamy head that leaves great lacing behind. Malty, sweet, candied plums, a milder version of Rodenbach Grand Cru which I just had an hour ago. Medium-thin bodied with smooth carbonation/mouthfeel. The taste is malty caramel, earthy, a bit bitter. After warming up I get a toffee & burnt caramel while the taste got a but sherry like. This doesn’t come together for me. I get the feeling they’ve toned down the Belgian beer styles to avoid shocking a palette used to boring macro-lagers. They make good beers but I’d like to see them be more adventurous.

Quick bottle pick up as my little sake jaunt continues. Pours yellowish with nose of alcohol. Tastes overwhelmingly of unpolished rice, some cantaloupe, grass, and rubbing alcohol. Palate is grainy and finishes a bit harsh. But still for a cheap sake it’s not terrible.

320 ml bottle from Liquor Mountain. Very carbonated, fizzy, bubbly, with lightly cloudy usunigori underneath. Fruity, citrus nose, orange, peach. Very sweet, cloying, fruity flavor, citrus and lightly tropical. Fizzy, but soft. Kid’s stuff. No real character to speak of.

330ml bottle from Yokohama Hakurankan @Yokohama Chinatown. Pours with a nice head, colour is dirty copper, hazy. Aroma is quite simple - initially some alcohol spikes, bit of fruits (apples?), also some malty bread. Quite pleasant. Taste feels a bit like a traditional homebrew - yeasty, taste variations limited, some acidity ending up in a rather dry aftertaste. Yep, it does remind me "koduõlu" that was brewed in Estonia last summer by Saku Brewery - considering that this beer should be made after the recipe of "the very first Japanese beer", this feels appropriate. Overall interesting experience, I do like it more than your usual lager.

Bottle from a liquor shop in Roppongi. It pours a cloudy gold with a nice spicy white beer aroma. The taste is a very solid witbier. ---March 2014---- On tap, at Shirayuki taproom/brewery. Part of the 780 yen tasting set, a great deal! Light cloudy gold with a thick foamy head. Light spice & citrus aroma, I think the Hosokawa aroma is stronger. Light soft carbonation give it a smooth mouthfeel. The taste is weizen yeast spice notes with a kind of sweet soapy bubblegum quality. Tasty but I think I prefer the lighter Hosokawa.

330 ml bottle from Seijo Ishii @ Todoroki, Tokyo. Does not say "Shirayuki" on the bottle but only on my receipt - so probably this is the same drink. Limited summer edition, 4,5% alcohol, several different fruits listed as ingredients. Pours very pale, white, even too white fizzy foam that leaves soon, leaving some nice lacing on the glass. Carbonation not too bad, some bubbles rising to the top even several minutes after the pour. Aroma is citrus candy, orange peel and pineapple, lemonade - no hops, almost no malt. Grapefruit dominates the taste, leaving some bready malt notes lingering in the aftertaste. I guess that’s the only place you can understand this is actually beer. OK, also the foam tasted a bit of grains. Otherwise this drink reminds me mainly some "innovative" beer cocktails from home - something that is fine to try once to understand this is not really a beer.

On tap at Craft Beer Live in Osaka. It pours a nice amber color with a thick head of foam that has a mild reddish tinge to it. The aroma is fruity with touches or caramel & spice. It’s sweet & quite nice one of the better beers at the festival in my opinion.

Glass at tenzan. Pours clear with light tropical fruit nose. Tastes of vanilla, coconut, light melon, rice and a hinge if alcohol. Smooth and uneventful.

Bottle from my wifes relative in Nagoya, Japan. A cloudy, amber coloured pour with a small white head on top. Vague fruity, yeasty aroma. Tastes similar, slightly hoppy, fruity, yeasty. Struggled to finish this one unfortunately.
