Description
Established in 1719, Belhaven is Scotland’s oldest working brewery. With abundant local barley, fine water from the brewery well and access to markets up and down the coast, Belhaven was the perfect place for a brewery back then, and it still is today. In 1719, Dunbar market gardener John Johnstone erected a brewery close to Belhaven Bay and founded a brewing dynasty which was to last for 250 years and a brewery which would last much longer. The brewery and maltings persevered through the wars and upheavals of the early 20th Century and was eventually sold by John Johnstone’s descendants in 1972. In 2005 is was taken over by Greene King who kept the Brewery open in Scotland.

0,5 bottle. I'm a little wary of the "white bottle", they don't fill "normal" beer in it... The label isn't very pretty, but it's not ugly either, Scottish. The beer has a small, but persistent head next to the bottle, the color is nice and dark, leaning towards black. Aroma: classic earth, coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, dryness. Not bad, but not too intense either. The stout oiliness comes out, dry sipping sensation, bitter, roasted malt. This is a pub stout, drinkable, but for me it's too dry, and a bit boring.

Pours a deep, possibly hazy dark brown. Head disappears surprisingly fast, leaving no lacing to speak of. Not too much intensity in the aroma, where a decently deep malty base (caramel, lighter chocolate and hints of roasted malts) is followed by fruitiness (berries/fruit cake). Feels deeper and brighter in the taste: nicely deep malty base: caramel and lighter toffee as the base, light notes of chocolate and hints of coffee; possibly the slightest hint of spiciness; bright/vivid and slightly juicy soft fruity notes (fruit cake/berries). Finishes semi-dry with a bit of fruity reminiscence. Medium to dense bodied with quite light carbonation, resulting in a nice, slightly creamy mouthfeel that feels both full enough and silky smooth. Pretty nice example of the style.

Pours mid amber and slightly hazy. Slightly off-white head, quite big and very compact as you would expect from a draught pour; shows good enough retention but actually not much lacing. A quite subdued aroma with biscuity and slightly toffeeish malts followed by hints of fruitiness and caramel. There's also a slight background of cola-like feel that gives it a bit of fresh feeling. Taste notes as per aroma, as the smell suggested not much going on in terms of both intensity and depth. Overall definitely on the sweet edge of the style but manages to finish dry enough and still slightly refreshing. Light bodied with quite light, extremely delicate, thin-bubbled carbonation, resulting in a very smooth and easy mouthfeel. A very mild take on the style that aims mainly at quaffability; quite good at that.

Pours black or almost so with a quite thin dirty yellow/tan head; shows good enough persistence and lacing though. Pretty mild aroma, with a very gentle/soft milky stout base and delicate fruitiness (fruit cake) followed by very light hints of coffee and chocolate. Taste notes follow the aroma closely but in brighter, more vivid way. Pretty sweet even for an oatmeal stout with quite a lot of milky/soft feel, but still manages to close with a cleansing and quite dry finish/aftertaste that also shows a balsamic hint. Light to medium bodied with quite light carbonation, feels surprisingly easy going and easily drinkable for it's abv; went down pretty quickly. Maybe not a remarkable beer, but a very accomplished attempt at a pleasing/approachable stout that i quite enjoyed.

As Belhaven Saltire. Malt aroma, some toasted bread. Similar taste of malt with grains backbone, mid-sweet and limited bitterness, quite dry.

Belhaven McCallums Sweet Scottish Stout Smell-weak malt, faint coffee remains. Foam-thin, malt, faint coffee remains, bitterness. Head is tiny, and white-brown in color. Appearance- simple can. Clear dark ruby in color, no carbonation. From - pint Taste - malt, faint sweetness, faint coffee remains. More malt and very faint sweetness. Quite malty, somewhat neutral. If the price is good - not even bad, could take one more. If competing with other better stouts avoid it.
