West Coast IPA brewed at America's (south) east coast, can from Beergium, apparently already a year and two months old - so I got it with a discount, as befits a modern and well-informed beer shop, why not... Cobweb-lacing, medium sized, eggshell-white, quite stable (if slowly opening here and there) head on an only lightly hazy, deep orange-hued peach blonde beer with tiny, but enthusiastic bubbles rushing upwards everywhere. Aroma of mandarin, peaches from a can, honey, warm biscuit, pineapple, pink peppercorns, unsalted peanuts, blood orange juice, cake dough, marmalade, dried basil. Sweetish onset, hinting at ripe peach, lychee and mandarin, medium carbonated (refined, but still adding slight minerally accents), sourish edge but very 'dimly' so; slick, oily body, lovely biscuity and thinly cake-like maltiness with a drier cereally edge, soaked in a resinous, grapefruity, peppery hop bitterness which remains altogether mild for a West Coast IPA. Some old carboard and vague herb cheese notes due to age, but not disturbing (me) at all, as these aspects are still accompanied by a fairly bright 'orangeness' and aspects of toasted onion and green olive as well. Long, spicy finish, with lingering juicy biscuitiness from the malts; the bitterness does however win in the end. In spite of this being past its prime, considering the age at which even West Coast IPAs are best consumed, I must say that it has held up remarkably well, still bringing bright citrusiness and spicy bitterness and hardly showing signs of aging. I may be saying something here that will shock a lot of diehard IPA drinkers, but this is not the first time I encounter one that still tastes fine after a year or more - at least in the West Coast style, since I would not risk it with a New England style IPA. Very much enjoyed this one, all things considered, and the fact that it still tastes bright at this age, means that both the quality of the beer and the keeping circumstances at Beergium must be optimal...
