Description
Yazoo Brewing Company started from a homebrewer’s dream – Linus Hall’s love for making (and drinking) craft beer soon led him to open Nashville’s first production brewery since Prohibition. We opened our doors in October 2003 in the historic Marathon Motor Works building, and started by self-distributing kegs of Pale Ale, Dos Perros, Spring Wheat, and Onward Stout to local bars and restaurants, and we fortunately gained an enthusiastic local following. We quickly replaced the Spring Wheat with the now popular and award-winning Hefeweizen, and we started bottling our beer in 2005. Other local favorites like the Sly Rye Porter and our Hop Project IPA rounded out the line-up of beers. In 2009, Yazoo managed to brew Tennessee’s first ever legal high-gravity ale, SUE, our smoked porter and homage to the South’s proclivity to smoke all kinds of foods. In 2010, Yazoo moved to The Gulch, now one of Nashville’s most active neighborhoods. This allowed us to add a new 40-barrel brewhouse and room to produce more beer, which helped build our year-round lineup to 10!
In the summer of 2012 Yazoo began a series of sour and wild beers with local brewer/writer Brandon Jones called the Embrace The Funk series. Titled with Brandon’s popular sour beer website, this line of Yazoo beers explores the many wonderful beers that can be produced with wild yeasts, souring microbes and different wooden casks.
In December 2012 our Brewmaster Linus and “Wrangler of Funk” Brandon released the first beer in the series named “Wild Child”. Since then the “Embrace The Funk” series has been a staple in the Yazoo Taproom with special rotating offerings. Our ETF beers have been served at SAVOR in New York, “What The Funk” in Denver and on January 26th, 2014 the first bottles of ETF “Deux Rouges” were released (and sold out in 2 hours). Linus and Brandon are constantly creating new beers and different barrel variations for the Embrace The Funk series. The beers are mostly taproom exclusives so your best bet to enjoy their creations is to stop by soon!
We continued to grow enough that in early 2018, Linus Hall announced plans to move the Taproom and Brewery to a brand new 6.5 acre campus north of downtown – but not until Summer/Fall 2019!
Yazoo continues to be an independently owned and operated brewery – Linus and Lila Hall maintain 100% ownership and direction of the brewery, and you can frequently find Linus tinkering with something in the production facility 5-7 days a week!

bottle, corked and capped. As Yazoo Embrace The Funk Ciel Natal fantastic wild ale aroma with lots of nuances from the lagering and the spanish sherry. leathery, sour but not overly so, complex, malty sweetness in there too, but also tons of wild ale flavors. saison or biere de garde like hay notes, but subtle and actually adding to the whole. Great aroma. this bottle opened apr. 2024, released 2022 the two years have not done any damage as far as I can tell. it's on top or getting better. Flavor is wild ale, nicely sour, tart, faint spanish sherry, wooed, leather, slightly citrussy sourness, really pleasant sourness, no nailpolish, no crazy salad dressing, no concentrated vinegar, just sour/tart wild ale bliss.

Poured at SP Invitational out of a mini foeder. Cloudy orange with medium white head that lasts. The aroma is strong passionfruit, peach flesh, funk, oak. Thin body, strong passionfruit, juicy peach, funk, nice tartness, enjoyed this.

Bottle, released 2021 tasted apr.14.2024 Bretty and sweet spicy aroma, very similar to a saison. also notes of wood and some sweet malts as well as sweet fruits. Flavor is certanly wild, bretty, sweet notes but also some sourness , mostly saison like with fine and complex spicy notes. great saison like wild beer.

Bottle, released 2021, rated 2024-apr-07 rich funky wild ale aroma with tons of wood and some sour malts, judging from aroma, this could be an extraordinarliy sour beer with a lot of vinegar like notes. the sourness in the aroma has a lot of sweeter notes to it.. it's an easy 8, could be a 9. balanced, powerful. flavor is wood, red wine, sour wheaty beer, thick palate, sourness is balanced by lots of wood and red grapes and even some faint dried dark fruits going on. Reminds me of good beligan dark sour beers. Well done. complex, interesting, kept well for 3 years.

12oz can. I'd wager this one was brewed up at Molsen/Coors. Pretty sure this might be my first India Rye Lager. Pretty solid overall. Tastes are a little more rounded out than a Rye IPA, but kind of takes away some of what makes the style enjoyable too. Pretty decent beer all the way, even good.

bottle. surprisingly sweet aroma, apricot i think, cucumber, swimming pool water, fainter sweet malts. quite surprising. not bad, but not at all expected by me, from a beer called funk fest. looking at ingredients it makes some more sense. the chardonnay and the apricots seem to have totally dominated the aroma. which is then a lot more interesting than pleasant, to me. Flavor is initially very sour and tart, then the sweet apricot takes over, while in the end, the sour and tart takes over again, this time accompanied with wood and barrel and grapes. not bad, quite interesting in fact, and quite an experience. a tiny bit of nailpolish, unfortunately, but overall a refreshing and very interesting sour by the taste - the aroma is just weird.

Bottle. batch 5. No brewed date or best before date that I can find. Aroma is super duper nice funky saison, mild as such, but with a lot of complexity, leather, funk, wood, yeasts, of course the saison wildness, yet the aroma seems well blended and balanced and might come of as just strangely malty if you don't delveinto the details. this is really nice. very well use of barrels to enhance the aroma. Flavor is wild, quite sourish, quite tart, bit citrussy, still a lot of woody complexity but more in the background than in the aroma. Flavor is a lot more like a really tasty wild ale sour (quite sour) than a saison. The flavor is clean sour with the wood touch. very easily drinkable if you like very sour, good sour aftertaste. really good sour. A lot different from aroma, but almost equally awesome.

(Draught at Moeder Lambic Original, Brussels, 20 Oct 2023) Hazy golden amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity, funky nose with apricots, citrus, oak wood, grapes and brett. Fruity, tart taste with notes of grapefruit, sour grapes, apples, oak wood, a touch of vinegar and a dry and tart finish. No bitterness. Medium body, dry. Fresh and tasty, with a generous bretty acidity. Very nice.
