sample from a 2003 bottle - Pours thick and black with a thin tan head. There’s an okay dark roast malt aroma. Coffee definitely comes through in the intense roasted malt flavor. It’s somewhat lacking in complexity, but seems to have aged nicely. Hopefully I can get a bottle or two of this one.

sample from a 2003 bottle - There’s a nice citrus hops aroma. The alcohol that others mentioned has mellowed with age. There’s a great medium bodied, lightly carbonated mouthfeel. It’s a nice beer, overall. Hopefully they have some bottles to sell this holiday season and I can get one to myself.

bottle - Pours black with a one finger head. The roasted malt aroma has some pleasant coffee notes, as does the flavor. The body is a touch thin with light carbonation. There’s some good bitterness in the finish.

draft - Pours transparent gold with a very thin head. The aroma is mostly sweet malt and candi sugar. The flavor is also very sweet with a little mild hops in the finish, but not much. It’s smooth and medium bodied. This is an easy to drink, sweet, pretty decent ale.

draft - Pours copper with and moderate head. The hoppy aroma has some nice citrus notes. The flavor continues the good citrus hops and reveals a nice malty balance. There’s a lingering bitter finish that’s enjoyable enough. Good beer.

draft - Pours reddish and clear with a moderate head. The aroma is very light malts. The flavor is also light and the palate is too watery. More body and hops would have helped. Drinkable, but that’s about it...

Tap at MA Warsaw. Light metallic malt aroma. Dark amber with nice, long lasting head. Slight caramel malt sweetness initially - maltiness crescendos throughout and finishes with a mild hops finish. A very good vienna.

2006 bottle from MI2CA, drunk on 8/23/06.
Foamy, off-white head is composed of large, force carbonated bubbles and sits atop an amber-caramel colored body with light honey suggestions. Clear, with plenty of fizzies swirling about, bolstering the head, which eventually fades to a ring, leaving little/no lacing.
Hard, citric and piney hops boast the classic, C-hop, high AA, bitter APA nose. Add to this the hard crystal malt sweetness (some caramel, rather dry) and a bit of fruitiness and you’ve got yourself Alpha King.
The filtered, non-bottle conditioned texture is even true to the original, with hard crystal malt dryness, some sweetness from pale malts and the bitter, acidic C-hops that we so love and enjoy in this country. Grapefruit, pine, caramel, candied oranges, raspberries, cherries about sum up the flavor profile. No alcohol noted, little to no yeast apparency. Too hard due to the high filtration.
