Shiga Kogen x Pizza Port One in a Thousand West Coast IPA 6% When I heard of this I immediately wanted to try it, I then heard good things from a few friends who tried it on draft. It’s a clear gold with a vibrant woodsy spicy cotrusyvhop bouquet. Medium bodied with a somewhat slick mouthfeel and this is BITTER piney flavor after an initial sweeter citrus hop character. Very west coast, very clean but not too balanced.

750 ml bottle, mail order from the brewery. Batch #1. Brilliant, sparkling gold. Clear. High, quick fading head. Super bretty nose. Green apples, vanilla, oak, grapefruit zest. Big lactic acid flavor, cream and vanilla, oak, lemon creme, green apple, light rice sweetness, touch of old leather. Not very sour, but quite complex, though doesn’t seem super old.

Slightly hazy golden color. Fresh bread, spelt, funky yeast and a touch of sourness in the nose. Light body, slightly tart, nice depth, love the spelt. Refreshing. Very nice.

Bottle from the brewery. Fresh nose, herbal, piny, minty, apricots, oranges. Hazy deep golden color. Very piny, resiny flavor, some tropical fruit and citrus, bready malt. Finish is grassy and very bitter. The body is crisp and light. A fun beer, very grassy and resiny and herbal. Somewhat too bitter, but I got used to it. These guys know how to work with fresh hops--unlike just about everyone else in Japan. They're not the greatest hops but they work in this.

Tap at Takumiya. Tropical fruit hops, biscuity malt, citrus in the nose. Glowing orange with a low head. Sweet, strong, hoppy. Hugely fruity, with melon, peaches, mango, orange. Slightly dank too. A bit too sweet, heavy, and strong for my liking, but interesting.
