YellowBelly Beer (Ireland)
Microbrewery
in Wexford,
Wexford,
Ireland 🇮🇪
Associated Venue: Simon Lambert & Sons
Established in 2015
YellowBelly poured their first pint in May 2015, but the idea was born long before that. The founders of the brewery Nicky and Simon Lambert attended a brewing course in Manchester in 2009, and from then on the dream of opening a brewery on the site of their family pub began. Their first aim was to turn their pub into a craft beer destination in the heart of Wexford Town. Focusing on Irish Craft Beer & Spirits they quickly built up an exciting range of quality Irish products and went about changing the tastes of locals and enticing tourists into their pub. With a market established they set about work on their own 200 litre nano brewery in the basement of the pub. This work began in 2013, converting old store rooms into a semi-automated brewery, built using reconditioned tanks and a bit of local sweat and knowledge.
The fruits of that labour were a 200 litre Brewhouse capable of producing 20 kegs a week split across 3 products. A pale ale, lager and a special. This weekly special quickly put YellowBelly on the map. Under the stewardship of Head Brewer Declan Nixon over 100 unique beers were produced in our first year, with Simons Lambert & Sons being the only outlet to get your hands on them. Some of these early beers include the likes of Castaway and Citra which have become staples of the brewery throughout its history.

Can from O’Brien’s, Athlone [060717]
Orange yellow, very hazy, no head just thin rim around glass edge
Aroma - Soft aroma of boiled fruit sweets
Taste of soft sweet fruit salad, orange, red berries, strawberry - getting a trace of the Buckfast I think...nice mellow fruits in this, quite a lot going on here even if it’s subtle, gets more tasty with the drinking...
Palate - Soft carb, medium light bosy, smooth texture, light sweet. Finish of soft sweet fruits, soft fruit salad sweet linger
Overall - Not a lager, more a fruit beer - had to try a beer with Buckfast chucked in. Now where can I try this on tap....

Can at the Old Dears, from Callans, 09/07/17. Orange with a pinkish glint topped with an off white to faded crimson cap. Nose is lemon jelly, tangy strawberry, fruit punch, damp straw. Taste comprises a lactic tang, decaying strawberries, rhubarb sours, grains, light funk. Another decent and refreshing fruit sour from Yellowbelly but doesn’t quite come up to the level of the Passionfruit number for me.

Can at the old dears, from Callans, 09/07/17. Very light haze on a golden pour with a decent off white head that dissipates to spotting in due course. Nose carries pissy green berry notes, light floral notes, funk, passionfruit evident, citric sherbets, stewed rhubarb. Taste comprises pissy citric shreds, light funky brett notes, vanilla, passionfruit, lemon tinged straw, light spice, grains. Medium bodied, spritzy carbonation, drying close with a mello acidic bite and accompanying pucker. Solid refreshing sour ... top draw for the ABV.
