Description
It all started with a humble homebrew kit and the drive to make better beer. Tired of the same bland and dated choices everywhere, Air Force friends Eric Wallace and Dick Doore set out to make the kind of beer that excited them; beer they wanted to drink. A hobby quickly became an obsession and it wasn't long before Left Hand Brewing opened for business on January 22, 1994. Left Hand has steadily increased its production, making the Brewers Association’s Top 50 Craft Brewers list in 2012.

16 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a semi-clear orange-gold color with a small, tight white head and good retention. Good lacing. No real nitro action. Pumpkin spices and light coffee aroma (as expected). The taste follows the nose: Light coffee flavor with pumpkin pie spices. To me, the mix is very muddled, with neither flavor shining through. A little too much coffee in the balance. Ashen notes like a blonde stout. Medium body. Low, soft carbonation. Not bitter. The 7.0% ABV is very well hidden.

16oz can. Big pumpkin pie spice aroma, really smells like a pumpkin pie. The pumpkin flavoring is so bold, I don't really get a lot of coffee at first, but it came out. I like a good pumpkin beer, but this just comes off too artificial and flavored.

Bottled (from Systembolaget Umeå). Black colour with a mediumsized longlasting foamy beige head. Aroma is milk chocolate, some slight roasted notes along with toffee and caramel. Flavour is toffee, caramel and some milk chocolate at first, but then a rather big ashy/roasted edge kicks in. Creamy palate. The lack of CO2 and the roasted edge takes this down a bit from what it could be.

Can at BBT 9/2023. Medium body, medium carbonation. Fully malty, with pleasant moderate coffee, slightly deep roasted, med-light cocoa. Moderate grassy, slightly earthy hops character. Very classic feeling English style porter, I fancy this. Tasty, drinkable, pretty good.

On the sweet side for the style, needing a touch more floral and toasted notes to balance out the caramel front. Finishes with a mild bitterness and hints of toasted wheat bread. Decent, if a tad simple.
