Description
Griffin Claw Brewing Company’s official opening day may be July 18th, 2013 but it all started when Dan Rogers began working his magic at Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham, MI. Dan had been brewing since 1991 and eventually found his way to Big Rock in 2004, this is the unofficial start of Griffin Claw. Dan continued hammering out amazing beers in the small confines of Big Rock and the Michigan beer community started taking notice. It wasn’t until 2010 that his name and beers received a lot more attention. 2010 was a big year, winning two World Beer Cup medals for Norm’s Raggedy Ass and Bonnie’s Raggedy Ass.

Griffin Claw’s culture is that of growth. Our path to get where we are has been a quick one but it’s because of our people. We are centered around young, hungry, active beer enthusiasts – with a foundation of grizzled vets. Our love for this Great Beer State is increased as the days go on and we love the industry that we’re in.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2017 vintage bottling. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raspberries, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, smoke, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, raspberries, cocoa, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raspberries, raisin, plum, fig, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of molasses, licorice, smoke, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Light roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, raspberries, dark fruit, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, dark/brown bread, light molasses/smoke, and roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, raspberries, cocoa, and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing drying from roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness. Medium carbonation and full body; with a very smooth, creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Slight slickness, chalky roast, and oak tannins. Alcohol is extremely well hidden; a mildly increasing warmth of 14%, with zero barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an amazing fruited barrel aged imperial stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, raspberries, cocoa, and bourbon barrel flavors; insanely smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV. Perfect balance of raspberries, cocoa, and rich base stout malt complexity. Amazing barrel integration; never boozy, tannic, or overly drying. A highly enjoyable offering.

Great Taste of the Midwest 2017. Solid name and packaging. Copper color and light carbonation. High alcohol in the flavor and aroma, and it really impacts the beer overall. It is sweet, but hard to get past the alcohol, which the predominant quality of this beer. it is sold in a bomber and so rich and full of alcohol, it is hard to think of finishing one myself.

Bomber shared by Marcus. It’s a moderate gusher. Pours hazy ruddy brown with a fizzy tan head. Aroma of sourish red berry. Med body or so. Flavor is somewhat light sour red berry with significant malt of a slightly roasty sort. It’s very tasty. Not all that dry, and not really bitter, but it works very well. I’m likin’ it.

can - Hazy light gold pour, aroma of citrus hops and some light, bready malt. The flavor is dominated by the citrus accented hops. Refreshing. Light bodied. Crisp. It's a very nice session IPA.

Can. Pours a hazy orange with a big sudsy head and aromas of tangerines that might be a bit past their expiration date. Flavor is medicinal oranges with a boozy edge to it and just nasty as far as I’m concerned. Whatever the intent here, it didn’t work. Blech!
